The Inhouse Farming Feed & Food Convention 2027 will take place on 21–22 April at the Congress Center Hamburg in Germany under the theme ‘Driving Innovation across the Agrifood System,’ according to organiser DLG.

The international conference and business platform brings together stakeholders from agriculture, the food and feed industries, technology and research to examine how new raw material sources, innovative production technologies and industrial processing methods can be combined into economically viable value chains.

Alternative proteins and the processing challenge

Alternative protein sources are becoming increasingly important for resource-efficient food and feed production, whether plant-based proteins, algae, fungi or proteins derived from fermentation. However, the event organiser notes that their economic success depends on aligning production, processing and marketing.

“Many processing technologies for plant-based raw materials originated in feed production. They are often designed to process large volumes efficiently but do not sufficiently account for the functional properties of proteins that are crucial for food applications,” said Carla K Herbst, Deputy Managing Director of the DLG Competence Center for Agriculture and Food. “To obtain high-quality plant proteins, processing technologies must be further developed and considered already at the raw material production stage.”

Market realities

DLG points to its study ‘DLG Insights 2026: Alternative Protein Sources,’ which surveyed approximately 700 farms. According to the findings, 61 percent already grow protein crops, but only 19 percent consider this a promising source of income, with low prices and insufficient marketing channels cited as barriers.

The findings indicate that technological innovation and new production opportunities alone are not sufficient. For alternative protein sources to succeed in the long term, economically viable prospects must exist for all actors along the value chain.

Programme topics

The two-day programme will address the economic viability of new production methods amid high energy and labour costs, regulatory requirements for novel foods and feed ingredients, quality and safety standards, and consumer acceptance.

The accompanying foyer exhibition offers companies and start-ups the opportunity to showcase solutions and establish contacts. Target groups include agricultural producers, food and agricultural companies, technology suppliers, agri-tech and food-tech start-ups, research institutions, investors, industry associations and policymakers.

The Convention complements the Inhouse Farming Feed & Food Show, which takes place from 10–13 November 2026 as part of EuroTier in Hanover, Germany. The Show makes current technologies visible and tangible, while the Convention in Hamburg deepens the professional discussion and focuses on knowledge transfer, business models and networking.

Designed for adult and senior dogs, LEVENDO™ is gently baked rather than extruded and includes highly digestible mycoprotein containing all essential amino acids and naturally occurring beta-glucans. Enifer states that its PEKILO® mycoprotein is highly digestible, with a canine feeding study showing strong protein digestibility, and naturally contains nutrients including B vitamins and spermidine.

Evonik has launched Lypron®, a rumen-protected lysine solution designed to deliver targeted amino acid nutrition in ruminant production.

According to the company, the solution delivers metabolisable lysine precisely where it is needed, supporting optimal utilisation of nutrients in ruminants. Lysine is one of the most limiting amino acids in ruminant nutrition, and the product’s high and reliable metabolisable lysine content enables producers to balance diets more precisely, reducing the need for expensive protein sources.

The product was developed in collaboration with Sipena, a French specialist in coating technologies that will exclusively manufacture Lypron®.

“With Lypron®, we are expanding our ruminant solutions to complement our established products like Mepron®,” said Marion Hax, Head of the Specialty Nutrition Product Line. “Completing our amino acid balancing concept allows us to support customers in achieving both higher performance and more sustainable feeding strategies.”

The product supports the use of low-protein diets by improving dietary amino acid balance and optimising nitrogen utilisation, the company states. This can contribute to lower nitrogen excretion, helping farms reduce environmental impact while maintaining productivity.

“Lypron® helps nutritionists optimize amino acid supply, increase productivity, and reduce reliance on excess dietary protein, which is increasingly important both economically and environmentally,” said Claudia Parys, Global Head of the Ruminant Business.

Evonik reports that the product also enables more flexible feeding strategies, including low-protein and soy-reduced diets. As a non-GMO solution, it supports market requirements in regions where GMO-free production is essential.

FeedTechnoVision 2026 has highlighted five takeaways for improving feed safety, efficiency and animal performance across Asia. Presented by Trouw Nutrition, the event brought together 180 industry stakeholders in Jaipur, India, to discuss data, collaboration and process control.

During the annual event, presentations and panel discussions including global feed industry experts explored the challenges and opportunities confronting Asia’s feed sector. The following are five take-home messages from FeedTechnoVision 2026.

ASIA’S OPPORTUNITY: COLLABORATE ACROSS THE FEED-TO-FOOD CHAIN TO DRIVE GROWTH
International Agri-food Strategist Osler Desouzart opened FeedTechnoVision 2026 by sharing his insights from his work in South America and on Brazil’s emergence as the world’s largest poultry exporter.

Challenges facing Asia’s feed-to-food chain include massive variability in raw materials and production processes, and a digital revolution that is still underway. Desouzart emphasized that feed industry stakeholders must work together to achieve more predictable, safe and efficient outcomes. He challenged the industry to improve collaboration among feed manufacturers, suppliers, academia, regulators, and other stakeholders.

“Hunt in a pack and defend as a pack,” Desouzart advised, noting that collaboration can help increase the value of the entire Asian feed sector.

RAW MATERIAL VARIABILITY CAN BE TRANSFORMED INTO PREDICTABLE ANIMAL PERFORMANCE
Feed ingredients’ nutritional values, microbial loads, and moisture profiles fluctuate across seasons, regions, and batches. Simply relying on ingredient “averages” when producing feed is no assurance of a finished feed’s safety, quality, or nutrient profile. Ultimately, this gap between average and actual can compromise animals’ genetic potential and performance.

FeedTechnoVision 2026 highlighted the importance of precise data in reducing these risks. According to Trouw Nutrition, there is a massive opportunity to improve FCR by reducing variability in raw materials, but the integrity of data is critical and communication matters, too. Timely communication between procurement, quality, nutrition, and operations can identify issues earlier, bringing more precision to formulations, and more predictability to animal performance.

FEED SAFETY IS A SYSTEM, NOT A SINGLE INTERVENTION
Raw ingredient quality, process variations, mould, and microbial threats must be managed in feed production. During FeedTechnoVision, Dr. Roland Koedijk, Global Head of Poultry at Trouw Nutrition, discussed how even small changes in raw ingredient quality can affect a formulation’s nutrition and impact animal performance.

While feed safety is complex, the management logic that steers decisions is straightforward, moving from risk analysis to interpretation, strategic intervention, verification and continuous improvement. An integrated approach addressing raw material quality, microbial and mycotoxin risk management, process control, monitoring, and verification offers a holistic process for supporting safe feed but is dependent on quality, nutrition, and operations teams making joint decisions and implementing integrated control measures.

THE FEED MILL OF THE FUTURE IS PERPETUALLY LEARNING
During FeedTechnoVision 2026, Microbiologist Dr. Jean-Michel Nebout of Laboratoire d’Analyses Microbiologiques, France, stressed that Asia’s feed sector must replace independent feed safety measures with an integrated, systems approach that considers microbial risks, mycotoxins, and process risks. “The future of feed safety is a shared risk that connects quality, nutrition and operations from identification through intervention, verification, and continuous improvement,” said Dr. Nebout.

He noted that feed-to-food safety measures must include operational processes that address microbial threats, optimise particle size, and achieve a proper moisture profile. Technology can help drive feed safety decisions but is not a panacea. Dr. Nebout observed that the feed mill of the future will be defined by data that supports continuous improvement. Reliable data informs decisions and enhances process control. Improvements don’t end when a batch leaves the feed mill. Shared feedback about quality and animal performance supports ongoing production enhancements that move a feed mill from reactive measures toward predictive strategies that further optimise feed.

PEOPLE-DRIVEN PROCESS CONTROLS ARE AT THE CENTRE OF BETTER DECISIONS
Dr. Dejan Miladinovic, Head of the Centre for Feed Technology at Norwegian University of Life Sciences, discussed the critical role that process control will play in the feed mill of the future. “Increasing raw material variability, process instability, rising energy costs and higher quality demands make operational excellence more important than ever, and ultimately it is people working together to improve moisture management, pellet quality, and manufacturing improvements,” Dr. Miladinovic stated.

While data can drive insights, he noted that cross-functional teamwork among procurement, nutrition, operations, and quality is critical to achieving meaningful improvements. The most significant productivity gains in feed production will not come from optimising one function harder but from connecting all functions better. Trouw Nutrition highlighted that his view complements FeedTechnoVision’s mission to serve as a knowledge exchange that advances understanding and generates a feedback loop to address customer challenges, share scientific and technical expertise, provide practical applications, and inspire continuous learning.

According to Pedro Caramona, Strategy Director – Feed to Food Safety at Trouw Nutrition, the overriding takeaway from FeedTechnoVision 2026 was the tremendous opportunity that exists to reduce variability and drive greater predictability in feed production throughout Asia. “By connecting human knowledge, precise data, enhanced processes, and collaborative teams, the feed sector can transform variability into predictable performance,” he said.

Serves as global headquarters of animal nutrition business

Mixscience will showcase five solutions for poultry, swine and ruminant production at EuroTier 2026. The portfolio includes tools for performance modelling and farm management, as well as products targeting antibiotic-free production, red mite control and feed efficiency.

Mixscience will welcome visitors to its booth (Hall 20, Booth C37) at EuroTier 2026, taking place in Hanover, Germany, from 10 to 13 November. The company’s product lineup for the exhibition will include five solutions for poultry, swine and ruminants, ranging from a broiler performance-modelling tool to a red mite control product for laying hens.

ADN: PERFORMANCE MODELLING FOR BROILER NUTRITION
ADN is a performance-predicting tool developed by Mixscience, based only on internal R&D results. It allows broiler operations to estimate the benefits of nutritional investments and to compare their performance with a predicted optimum. This comparison also makes it possible to assess feed utilization relative to the predicted optimum.

The tool has been active since 2024 and continues to evolve. In addition to predicting average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) according to nutritional levels, it can now predict breast meat yield (BMY). Mixscience says the modelling approach, based on 12 years of research, is reinforcing the tool as a robust, easy-to-use, adaptable and responsive solution, with the aim of meeting industry demands on zootechnical and quality aspects.

A similar tool has also been developed for slow-growing strains, allowing for performance prediction according to strain, nutritional levels, season and feed presentation form. Based on the company’s internal data and expertise, this tool dedicated to slow-growing broilers allows for predicting ADG and FCR performance, therefore estimating feed utilization by animals.

DISCOWER: TURNING MILKING ROBOT DATA INTO DECISIONS
Robotic milking systems are becoming a standard choice on dairy farms worldwide, both for new installations and for the renewal of milking equipment. Milking robots generate large volumes of data every day, but transforming that information into clear management decisions remains a major challenge for farmers and advisors.

To address this need, Mixscience introduces Discower, a digital solution to automate the analysis of data from milking robots and convert it into practical decision-support information. According to the company, it generates a clear and concise report with key technical and economic indicators, covering both the farm’s current situation and its history to provide a comprehensive assessment of herd and robot performance.

Discower is compatible with most major milking robot brands and is designed to be simple, fast and easy to use. Advisors and technical sales representatives can use the reports to identify strengths, detect improvement opportunities and monitor the impact of management changes on farm performance. Mixscience describes the result as a practical, data-driven approach to improving efficiency and profitability on dairy farms.

LUMIGARD MOST: SUPPORTING ANTIBIOTIC-FREE SWINE AND POULTRY PRODUCTION
Competitiveness, social expectations, health, safety and sustainability are among the challenges facing swine and poultry producers. Lumigard Most is a specific combination of short- and medium-chain fatty acid esters, selected to target pathogenic bacteria.

The product uses VSTAR technology, which the company says ensures easy and safe use and keeps the product stable in feed mills. VSTAR also controls the release of the ingredients, maximizing their efficacy in the animal. That the product is designed to limit colonization by pathogenic bacteria and promote positive intestinal flora. It also helps limit the production of pro-inflammatory compounds and improve animal performance.

Findings from poultry trials
According to the company, trials under necrotic enteritis challenge conditions showed that Lumigard Most helped limit digestive disorders, reduce pododermatitis risk and maintain zootechnical performance under challenged conditions (up to 0.04 FCR points).

Findings from swine trials
Lumigard Most’s main activity has been shown in swine production especially in piglets and sows by limiting the colonization of pathogenic bacteria such as S. suis or E. coli.

The company cites a commercial trial in Hungary in which Lumigard Most was associated with fewer digestive troubles in piglets and a reduced need for treatments related to E. coli. Mixscience also reports lower piglet mortality, especially in primiparous sows: 4.3% in the Lumigard Most group against an average of 11.1%. According to the company, performance was maintained during the sanitary challenge, with +28 g/day in the pre-starter phase, +45 g/day in the starter phase and +800 g in final weight after 69 days.

Feed intake was higher in sows receiving Lumigard Most and in piglets during the post-weaning pre-starter phase. The company reported differences of +27 g between days 26 and 39 and +84 g between days 39 and 54.

A recent trial at a research centre in Thailand compared Lumigard Most with other solutions, monolaurin and polyphenols, assessing growth performance and S. suis prevalence through nasal swabs and gene analysis. According to Mixscience, piglet weight in the Lumigard Most group was higher than in the negative control and the other solution groups in all phases. Average daily gain was significantly better than the negative control and numerically better than the other solution groups, in the pre-starter phase and at the end of the post-weaning period.

NOLIMIT: A NEW SOLUTION FOR RED MITE RISK MANAGEMENT
Mixscience introduces Nolimit, a product designed to support the management of red mite risks and their associated impacts in laying hen production. Its formulation combines two complementary modes of action: a plant-based component that acts mechanically on parasites and beneficial bacteria that establish a lasting barrier flora within the poultry environment.

The product, which is stated to be suitable for use in organic farming, is applied by spraying directly inside poultry houses, including in the presence of birds, making it easy to integrate into routine flock health programmes. According to Mixscience, both laboratory and field trials have demonstrated a marked reduction in parasite pressure using a simple protocol of two applications, seven days apart.

By combining efficacy, ease of use and environmental consideration, Nolimit is intended to help improve animal welfare while supporting farmers in managing one of the sector’s most persistent health challenges. With it, the company reinforces its commitment to sustainable and practical solutions for poultry production.

VALOPRO: MORE VALUE FROM THE DIET
The livestock production system is facing increasing challenges to improve animal performance while making more efficient use of feed resources. Climate-related disruptions, volatile agricultural markets and geopolitical uncertainties are impacting the availability, quality and cost of key raw materials.

Designed to improve the utilization of dietary energy and protein in ruminants, Valopro solutions help unlock more value from available feed resources. According to the company, by supporting rumen efficiency, the range provides greater flexibility when reformulating diets and helps secure raw material substitutions while maintaining technical performance. It can also be used “on top” of the existing feed formula, without changing it, to improve milk or meat production.

Within the range, Valopro NRJ is particularly suited to energy-dense diets and has shown consistent benefits in both dairy and beef production. Mixscience reports that trials recorded improvements in milk yield of up to 2 kg ECM/DC/d and an improvement of 100 g in average daily gain. The company presents these results as evidence of improved energy efficiency.

Recent research has also examined the product’s mode of action. According to the company’s statement, through metagenomic analysis of rumen microbiota, researchers observed a higher abundance of Prevotella bacteria in animals supplemented with Valopro NRJ. These microorganisms are known to play an important role in propionate production, a key pathway for energy supply in ruminants. The observed microbial shifts are consistent with the performance results reported in Valopro NRJ trials and contribute to a better understanding of the product’s mode of action.

Bühler Changzhou is celebrating its 20th anniversary, having grown since its establishment in 2006 into one of Bühler’s three global manufacturing hubs and the global headquarters of its Animal Nutrition business.

The site’s team of around 1000 supplies customers worldwide with approximately 30,000 units of equipment each year, including pellet mills, hammer mills, mixers, micro-dosing systems, vacuum coating equipment, extrusion systems, dryers, material handling solutions and a range of digital solutions. According to the company, the plant in Changzhou, China, is operating at maximum capacity, with orders booked through next year.

“Together, we have developed technologies that help feed producers improve efficiency, strengthen quality, and make better use of resources as their needs evolve,” said Philipp Hug, Head of Business Unit Animal Nutrition. “Over the last 20 years, Changzhou has grown into a center of expertise for developing and manufacturing these technologies.”

Industry context

According to Bühler, global feed production rose by another 2.9 percent in 2025 to 1.44 billion metric tonnes. Despite continued expansion, the company states that feed producers remain under pressure to improve efficiency, make better use of raw materials and energy, maintain consistent quality and take advantage of digitalisation.

Anniversary and innovation forum

More than 650 customers, partners, suppliers and industry experts joined for the Bühler Changzhou anniversary, which included the Value Nutrition Innovation Forum. According to the company, the forum addressed manufacturing efficiency, resource use, digital integration and changing nutritional needs, with participants exploring developments in livestock and poultry feed, aquafeed, premix production and pet food. Visits to customer plants offered a firsthand look at how processing technologies are used in commercial production.

“Our industry needs to meet growing nutritional needs while managing raw material costs, making better use of available resources, adapting to new ingredients, and maintaining quality and food and feed safety,” Hug said. “Efficiency and digitalization are key.”

Technology Presented

The technologies presented during the anniversary were designed to address these challenges, stated the company. These included the Z-Mission heat recovery system, the Nutrex 7 Series extrusion system (available since May 2026) and the Kubex 5 Series pellet mill.

Digitalisation formed another part of the programme, with the PelletingPro and ProteinPro systems providing real-time data and closed-loop control.

“The technologies we presented during the event respond to priorities we hear from customers around the world,” said Liping Shao, General Manager of Bühler Changzhou. “Producers need practical ways to improve efficiency, use raw material more efficiently, strengthen process control, and turn production data into better decisions.”

ADM will highlight redesigned feed packaging, feed block technologies and a presentation on poultry gut health at EuroTier 2026 in Hanover, Germany, from 10 to 13 November.

Animal nutrition experts from ADM will attend EuroTier 2026, taking place from 10 to 13 November in Hanover, Germany, to present the company’s solutions and services for improving production performance, reducing losses and creating value for producers. ADM notes that its capabilities across farmed species are tailored to improve animal health and robustness, increase protein production efficiency and reduce environmental impacts.

Among the products ADM will present at the trade fair are its Next Gen Bucket (NGB) for ruminant feed and its ADM BLOCK feed range. The NGB has been redesigned using 100% polyethylene to align with the requirements of the EU’s forthcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. The company reports that the new design reduces plastic use by up to 15%, while simplifying end-of-life recycling and improving ergonomics and pallet efficiency. The NGB has also been entered in the EuroTier Innovation Awards.

ADM BLOCK is designed to support natural licking behaviour and promote salivation and water intake, and offers species-specific hardness levels through its natural texture. Its COOLMIX technology uses a low-temperature, no-pressure pouring process to preserve sensitive ingredients, including vitamins, yeasts and plant extracts. A patented CALYPAC lid system is designed to protect the feed from contamination, moisture and UV exposure, helping maintain freshness and extend shelf life.

INVE Aquaculture and Santa Priscila have signed a collaboration agreement to offer Artemia paste to shrimp hatcheries in Ecuador. The agreement was signed on October 15, ahead of AquaExpo International, a major event for the global shrimp industry. The product is designed to provide a practical, convenient and biosecure solution for daily hatchery operations. The collaboration expands live feed options for Ecuadorian larviculture.

The collaboration brings together INVE Aquaculture’s more than four decades of experience in Artemia and Santa Priscila’s experience in producing nauplii paste for its own operations, alongside its knowledge of the Ecuadorian shrimp industry.

“For us, commercial partnerships start with understanding what the market needs and bringing together the right expertise to deliver the best solutions,” says Fernando Garcia, Commercial Director at INVE Aquaculture. “Ecuador is a key market for us, and we’re excited about this next step and what we can achieve together for Ecuador’s shrimp industry.”

East Caribbean Group of Companies is considering the engagement of an experienced Head Miller / Milling Operations Leader on contract for a period of at least one year.

The objective is to bring in a strong, hands-on milling professional who can provide direct operational leadership of the flour mill, strengthen milling discipline, improve process control, continue the training and development of ECGC’s millers, and support the development of an internal successor who can eventually assume the Head Miller role.

The person engaged would be required to relocate to St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the duration of the contract. ECGC would be open to considering suitable arrangements where the successful candidate wishes to relocate with family members.

Purpose of the Role

The Head Miller / Milling Operations Leader would be expected to provide practical day-to-day leadership of the flour mill, with particular focus on milling discipline, process control, flour quality consistency, miller development, preventive maintenance discipline, sanitation, reporting, and operational accountability.

The role is not intended to be advisory only. ECGC requires someone who can work directly with the millers on the floor, observe the process, make practical adjustments, coach the team, and help establish operating routines that produce consistent flour quality and efficient mill performance.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate would be expected to:

• Provide direct operational leadership of the flour mill.
• Lead, coach and develop the milling team through hands-on floor engagement.
• Strengthen milling discipline, shift handover, process monitoring and accountability.
• Support the development of an internal successor for the Head Miller role.
• Improve consistency in flour quality, extraction, flour colour, ash, protein and overall mill performance.
• Apply practical milling science, process control and laboratory data to day-to-day operational decision-making.
• Work closely with Quality, Maintenance, Operations and Procurement.
• Control and document wheat gristing changes, including the relationship between wheat quality, grist composition, finished product quality and cost.
• Strengthen wheat conditioning and tempering control, including target moisture, retention time, process checks and recording.
• Review and control mill loading, break release, roll adjustments, purifier operation, sifting performance, grinding control and flour stream management.
• Improve flour blending, set-off flour handling, start-up and shutdown practices.
• Ensure that operating practices are supported by clear procedures, records and routine checks.
• Strengthen production reporting, including hourly production data, extraction, break release, tempering information and key process checks.
• Use laboratory data, including moisture, protein, ash, flour colour, Farinograph results and bake test results, to support milling decisions.
• Support preventive maintenance discipline in collaboration with Maintenance, including roll condition, sifters, purifiers, filters, bran finishers, elevators and other key mill equipment.
• Reinforce sanitation, housekeeping, pest prevention and food safety practices within the mill.
• Assist with troubleshooting flour quality variation and customer-related performance issues.
• Help establish practical routines, records and controls that can be sustained after the contract period.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate should have:

• Strong practical wheat flour milling experience.
• Experience in modern wheat flour milling operations.
• Strong process control and troubleshooting capability.
• Ability to work in a hands-on production environment.
• Ability to train, coach and develop millers.
• Strong understanding of wheat storage, cleaning, gristing, conditioning, tempering, break release, purification, sifting, grinding, flour stream management, flour blending and set-off control.
• Good understanding of flour quality parameters, including moisture, protein, ash, flour colour, Farinograph results, bake performance and customer requirements.
• Ability to use production and laboratory data to support milling decisions.
• Ability to establish and enforce operating discipline, reporting routines and accountability.
• Working knowledge of preventive maintenance requirements for flour milling equipment.
• Strong communication skills and fluency in English.
• Formal training in milling science, cereal science, flour milling technology, or a recognised professional milling programme would be strongly preferred.
• Willingness to relocate to St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the duration of the contract.
• Willingness to support the development of an internal successor for the Head Miller role.

Preference would be given to candidates with:

• Regional experience in the Caribbean, LATAM or similar milling environments.
• Experience working in smaller or medium-sized mills where hands-on involvement is required.
• Experience with mills producing multiple flour types or SKUs from variable wheat grists.
• Experience developing local millers and building capability within the team.
• Strong practical industry experience beyond short-course training.
• Ability to work respectfully across cultures and with teams at different levels of experience.

The successful candidate should be practical, disciplined, patient, technically strong and comfortable working directly on the mill floor.

Cimbria has launched its Moduflex Dust-Free loading solution, a free-fall loading design that integrates the company’s Moduflex loading chutes with its new Type FT Multi-Outlet.

According to the company, the system is designed for cleaner outloading of bulk materials and significantly lower dust emissions for agricultural and industrial customers.

“Cimbria Moduflex Dust-Free is a first-of-its-kind free-fall loading design and the result of decades of experience in outloading engineering,” said Allan Flyvolm, Sales Manager, Moduflex. “By combining the loading chute with the Type FT Multi-Outlet, we have developed a unique system that reduces dust at source, so the entire outloading process becomes far cleaner, more predictable, and easier to control.”

Dust separation at source

Dust emissions are a major challenge for facilities handling dust-prone bulk materials, affecting air quality, reducing visibility and creating unnecessary wear on nearby equipment over time, the company stated.

The Type FT Multi-Outlet is designed to form what Cimbria calls a free-falling material beam. As material transitions into free fall, the heavier product accelerates downwards while lighter air and dust separate naturally from the stream. According to the company, this controlled separation removes almost all air and fine particles before the material reaches the loading zone.

The brand states that the free-falling material beam is particularly effective for open loading of flatbed truck types. Because air and dust are controlled inside the outlet before reaching the truck, operators can raise it above the loading zone and still discharge material with low dust emissions, without needing a dust skirt. Loading volume is up to 250m³/h, depending on the material.

“It’s an incredibly versatile solution. Facilities today are expected to move more material safely and with fewer interruptions,” Flyvolm said. “A dust-free loading solution like this delivers consistent flow across different products and gives operators the stability they need to keep production on schedule.”

The Type FT Multi-Outlet is compatible with all Moduflex Series 300 loading chutes.

Urschel Laboratories, Inc. has appointed Tim Crammer as President, effective October 12, 2026, following an extensive search by a select team of company executives. Crammer will work alongside Rick Urschel, who will continue to serve as CEO.

Crammer brings nearly two decades of leadership experience in the foodservice equipment industry. He most recently served as the Senior Vice President of Operations and Manufacturing at Henny Penny Corporation, a global supplier of commercial cooking equipment focused on the fast-food industry. Crammer joined Henny Penny in 2007, holding roles including Director of Marketing, Vice President of Marketing and Services, and Vice President of Supply Chain and Services.

Crammer’s experience at Henny Penny closely parallels Urschel’s own journey. He helped lead Henny Penny’s transition to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) in 2015, around the same time Urschel became employee-owned, and was part of the leadership team during Henny Penny’s CEO succession.

A native Midwesterner, Crammer earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Hanover College in Indiana, where he met his wife, Ellen. He also holds a master’s degree in logistics, materials, and supply chain management from Wright State University and an MBA from New York Institute of Technology. The couple has two sons.

As the fourth-generation leader of his family’s business, Rick Urschel is confident in Crammer’s ability to help guide the company forward.

“Tim has many professional credentials that make him well-suited for the role, but it was his personality that made us certain he was the right fit,” Rick Urschel said. “He has a great passion for the employee ownership mentality. With his personable nature and strategic leadership experience, Tim is well-equipped to make a highly positive impact at Urschel.”

Bühler Changzhou, China, has celebrated its 20th anniversary as global feed production continues to grow. The company reports that global feed production has grown steadily over recent years, rising by another 2.9% in 2025 to 1.44 billion metric tons. At the same time, feed producers worldwide face pressure to improve efficiency, make better use of raw materials and energy, maintain consistent quality, and take advantage of digitalization. To help producers navigate this changing landscape, Bühler Changzhou brings together animal nutrition expertise, technology, digital solutions, and services under one roof.

Established in 2006, Bühler Changzhou has become one of Bühler’s three global manufacturing hubs and serves as the global headquarters of its Animal Nutrition business. There, feed producers can work with Bühler teams across manufacturing, research and development, applications, training, and customer service to test new recipes, develop new processes, and explore solutions for evolving production needs.

Participants shared experiences and explored developments in livestock and poultry feed, aquafeed, premix production, and pet food. Among them was the Z-Mission, a heat recovery system designed to improve energy efficiency. Bühler also presented the Nutrex 7 Series, its new generation of extrusion systems, available to customers since May 2026, and the Kubex 5 Series, its latest pellet mill series for animal feed and food production.

According to Bühler, digitalization is another part of this shift toward more efficient and predictable production. The digital systems PelletingPro and ProteinPro provide real-time data and closed-loop control, helping create the foundation for a smart feed factory.

Parrish & Heimbecker has begun construction of two new grain storage silos at its terminal at the Port of Quebec, Canada, after receiving the necessary authorisations from the Quebec Port Authority.

According to P&H, the expansion will strengthen the terminal’s capabilities and improve operational flexibility. Fully integrated with the existing facility, the new P&H Port of Quebec silos will provide additional dockside storage capacity to optimise vessel loading and unloading.

The project marks another milestone in P&H’s continued investment in Canadian agricultural infrastructure and reinforces the role the Quebec terminal plays within the company’s national grain handling and transportation network, as reported by the company.

“This investment reflects our confidence in the future of Canadian agriculture and the critical role the Port of Quebec plays within our national network,” said Anthony Kulbacki, President of P&H Grain Division. “By strengthening our capacity at this strategic export location, we will be even better able to connect Canadian growers to global markets while supporting efficient, reliable grain movement across our network.”

According to P&H, the Port of Quebec is a strategic export gateway within its coast-to-coast network. Expanding the terminal strengthens the connection between Canadian producers and global markets.

Construction is underway and is expected to be completed in early winter 2028. According to the company, measures are in place to manage noise, dust and traffic and to minimise impacts on the surrounding community.

“We remain attentive to the community and will work closely with our partners throughout the project to minimize impacts as much as possible,” Kulbacki added.

P&H is a Canadian, family-owned agri-business with roots dating back to 1909. According to the company, it operates more than 90 locations from coast to coast, with operations including grain handling and merchandising, crop inputs, flour milling, feed milling and animal nutrition, as well as egg grading and food processing.

NAMA president points to affordability, innovation

Amandus Kahl and its sister company Schule Mühlenbau have built a new processing plant for soybeans, rapeseed press cake, rapeseed extraction meal and grains for Fixkraft-Futtermittel GmbH in Enns, Austria.

The Amandus Kahl Fixkraft plant was officially inaugurated on 19 September 2026. With an annual capacity of up to 280,000 metric tonnes of compound feed, Fixkraft is one of Austria’s largest producers. According to the companies, the new plant strengthens the company’s self-sufficiency and its role as a regional processor.

Located in Enns on the Danube, Fixkraft sources raw materials such as soybeans and rapeseed by ship from Hungary, Romania and other locations. The company primarily produces feed for cattle, pigs and poultry, supplemented by specialty products for other animal species. According to the companies, Fixkraft invested in its own processing plant to ensure the long-term quality of its formulations and to sell processed monocomponents to other compound feed producers and farmers in the region. A new 60-metre-high concrete building with integrated raw material silos and a processing plant was constructed at the site.

According to Amandus Kahl, the monocomponent plant processes three raw materials: broken soybeans, whole soybeans, and rapeseed press cake and extraction meal. Depending on the raw material, the product passes through the process steps in different sequences. The process includes a crushing roller mill, a short-time conditioner, a hydrothermal reactor, a crown expander, a belt dryer/cooler and a crumbler.

“It is precisely this variable process control that makes the difference. Fixkraft can quickly switch between process sequences depending on the raw material—thus remaining flexible in operation,” said Karsten Beck, Area Sales Manager at Amandus Kahl, who was responsible for the project. “This allows the company to respond to fluctuating raw material availability and varying formulation requirements without having to redesign the plant each time.”

Schule Mühlenbau supplied a flaking line and cleaning machines for maize, barley and wheat. According to the company, the core unit of the line is a flaking roller mill with upstream steam conditioning. The resulting grain flakes are used as an ingredient in various animal feed formulations, ranging from horse muesli to rabbit and rodent feed.

According to the companies, the next planned step for the flaking line is to retrofit it with the MultiSense measurement system from Schule Mühlenbau, which enables continuous monitoring of product quality directly during the production process. Fixkraft is also considering using screw presses from KAHL’s sister company Reinartz.

Plans for the monocomponent plant include expansion to process additional raw materials such as field beans, peas and grains.

VIV Africa 2026 concluded in Kigali after three days of bringing together the Feed to Food industry for business, knowledge exchange and innovation. The fifth edition welcomed a record 2257 visitors from 69 countries, highlighting the event’s growing international reach across the animal protein and agribusiness sectors.

Held at the Kigali Convention Centre, the event began with the Leadership Conference on 6 October, followed by two exhibition days on 7-8 October. It brought together professionals from across Africa and international markets to exchange knowledge, discover technologies and practical solutions, and develop new business relationships.

Across the exhibition floor, 153 exhibitors presented solutions spanning the Feed to Food value chain, including feed, animal health, breeding and hatching, farm production, processing and food engineering. The Leadership Conference drew 230 attendees, while 121 Industry Leaders participated in the VIV Africa 2026 edition.

Industry priorities take centre stage

The Leadership Conference brought together experts from across the region to share practical perspectives on strengthening Africa’s poultry and livestock sectors. Among the more than 30 speakers, Mary Were, Executive Director of the Kenya Poultry Farmers Association (KEPOFA), explored the potential of youth-led agribusiness to create sustainable livelihoods through poultry value chains.

She also addressed East African feed sovereignty, focusing on local sourcing, land productivity and regional integration. Dr Lawrence Ademu, Head of the Department of Animal Science at the Federal University Wukari, Nigeria, examined how stronger livestock cooperatives can improve quality and access to markets.

The focus on industry development continued on 7 October with the Investment & Market Access Forum. Powered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) and the Rwanda Food Innovation Partnership (RFIP), the invitation-only breakfast session featured a panel discussion on the market outlook, followed by discussions on concrete investment opportunities in Rwanda. The forum also addressed barriers to financing and ways to connect businesses with potential investors and partners to support Africa’s Feed to Food value chain.

Creating targeted business connections

VIV Africa 2026 marked the launch of its Hosted Buyer Program, connecting selected buyers with relevant exhibitors and supporting focused business conversations during the event. Together with the Industry Leaders program and meetings across the exhibition floor, the initiative created further opportunities for targeted business connections throughout the show.

The event also placed a dedicated focus on involving young professionals in the farming and agribusiness sectors. In partnership with the Rwanda Poultry Industry Association (RPIA), 180 young participants took part in the youth program.

The initiative connected participants with exhibitors, experts and industry professionals, providing practical knowledge, industry insights and a clearer understanding of opportunities across the sector.

Connections beyond the exhibition floor

Her Excellency Joan Wiegman, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Rwanda, hosted a networking evening at her residence, bringing together selected Dutch exhibitors and industry representatives.

The gathering extended discussions beyond the exhibition floor, creating opportunities to exchange views on business opportunities, industry developments and collaboration within Rwanda and the wider region.

VIV Africa expands into West Africa

Building on the strong participation in Kigali, VIV Africa will take place annually from 2027, alternating between East and West Africa to create more regular opportunities for the industry to connect across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The next edition will take place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on 6-7 October 2027, marking VIV Africa’s expansion into West Africa and extending the platform’s reach across the region.

The organisers thanked exhibitors, visitors, speakers, industry leaders, partners and participating organisations for contributing to the 2026 edition in Kigali.

The Helix® Flexible Screw Conveyor with the HiLo option and integral dust collection is a versatile solution for bulk material transport, batching and blending. It accommodates powders, granules, crystals, flakes and pellets, using a helical screw that rotates inside a fixed tube.

The Bulk Bag Unloader accommodates a range of bag sizes through adjustable frames and lifting mechanisms. According to the company, integrated dust collection and sealed discharge systems help maintain a cleaner work environment, while powered flow aids promote smooth discharge for materials prone to bridging, clumping or sticking. Automated controls support consistent flow rates, and the modular design allows integration into existing operations.

DLG and Women in Ag Magazine have announced the winners of Women in Ag Award 2026, with more than 170 women from 62 countries taking part across four categories.

Now in its fifth year, the award recognises women who have made outstanding contributions to the development of local, national and international agriculture. According to the organisers, this year’s edition carries particular significance, with the United Nations declaring 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

The award is presented in four categories: Farming, Agribusiness, Education, and Technology & Research. In each category, a first, second and third prize is awarded, with two candidates selected for third place in the Technology & Research category this year.

Farming

First place went to Marianne van den Hoek-Huijbregts (Netherlands), a Dutch arable farmer who developed Freshwater Focus, the first fully operational farmer-initiated Aquifer Storage & Recovery system in Dutch arable farming. Second place was awarded to Lavender Odeny (Kenya), founder of MashLav Foods, who is pioneering commercial mushroom farming in Kilifi County. Third place went to Marlen Arkesteijn (Netherlands), founder of Tuinderij de Stadsboerin, an ecological urban farm in Rotterdam.

Agribusiness

First place was awarded to Ifeoma Okonkwo (Nigeria), Co-Founder and Group Managing Director of Ifgreen Industries & Investment Ltd, which has created more than 3200 jobs and empowered over 800 female farmers. Second place went to Nakalema Assumpta (Uganda), founder of HatchRite Co Ltd, which has supported more than 700 farmers. Third place was awarded to Valentyna Bolokhovska (Ukraine), co-founder of BTU, one of Ukraine’s leading producers of biological solutions for agriculture.

Education

First place went to Valeriya Yudina (Kazakhstan), who transformed Digital Agroleaders from a student competition into a comprehensive educational ecosystem. Second place was awarded to Sharon Monethi (South Africa), founder of the Woman of Age Foundation, whose Hydro Coop farming model combines hydroponic crop production with cooperative enterprise development. Third place went to María Blanco (Colombia), co-founder and Executive Director of the El Porvenir Ecological Foundation.

Technology & Research

First place was awarded to Katharina Unger (Austria), founder and CEO of LIVIN farms, whose Hive PRO systems process more than 100,000 tonnes of organic by-products each year. Second place went to Dong Xiaoxia (China), a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences whose team developed a national agricultural information platform serving over 180,000 farming households. Third place was shared by Mirjam Lechner (Germany), who has advanced understanding of Swine Inflammation and Necrosis Syndrome, and Professor Amna Shoaib (Pakistan), a plant pathologist developing biological crop protection alternatives.

Award ceremony

The award ceremony will take place at EuroTier on 11 November 2026 at 16:00 CET at the DLG stand in Hall 13 in Hanover, Germany. Following the ceremony, the Female Agri Fellows networking event will take place at 17:00 CET.

The award is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, with patronage assumed by Alois Rainer, German Federal Minister of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity.

BTZ at Port of Gdynia handles range of dry bulk goods

The Alapala Georgia feed facility was developed with Alapala Feed Tech’s feed processing technologies and represents an investment in the country’s agricultural and livestock sectors, contributing to the development of local feed production capabilities.

Gulfem Alapala, the company’s Board Member, attended the inauguration ceremony and highlighted the company’s approach to long-term partnerships.

Egypt’s modern wheat silo capacity has more than tripled since 2014, growing from 1.2 million tonnes to 3.9 million tonnes, with the state targeting 6 million tonnes by 2030, according to the Egyptian Holding Company for Silos and Storage.

Private contractors including Hassan Allam, Orascom Construction and Samcrete are taking a share of the construction work, while lenders including the World Bank are covering part of the cost, as reported by EnterpriseAM. Egypt wheat storage expansion comes after repeated supply shocks since 2022, with the country seeking to hold more of its wheat at home rather than relying solely on global markets.

Ashraf Sadek, Managing Director and CEO of the holding company, stated that current silo capacity gives the state flexibility to hold reserves covering more than eight months of total wheat consumption. According to the USDA’s forecast of about 20.7 million tonnes of consumption in 2026/27, 3.9 million tonnes of silo capacity covers a little over two months.

Reducing losses through modern storage

According to Sadek, grain stored in open-air yards known as shona has cost the state 10–15 percent of the harvest, while losses in modern silos are close to zero. The World Bank estimates the reduction in losses at 40–50 percent compared to traditional storage.

Egypt has 69 state-owned silos, 50 of which belong to the holding company. The network supplies mills with approximately 24,200 tonnes of wheat per day, with sensors tracking stock. With the World Bank and other donors, the country is upgrading its information system to link silos, mills and bakeries.

Investment and expansion

The holding company aims to add 1 million tonnes of capacity in FY 2026/27, with Sadek telling Al Borsa in August that the company is investing around EG£7.5 billion to add 875,000 tonnes of grain storage capacity. Its own 44 silos held 2.56 million tonnes as of May, averaging about 58,000 tonnes each. Another 50 silos with a combined capacity of 1.5 million tonnes are under construction under the National Silos Project.

The World Bank is financing 700,000 tonnes of new and upgraded silo capacity, according to its 2025 report, while France’s AFD and the EU are backing another 375,000 tonnes. The European Investment Bank has approved an EU€90 million concessional loan for the Egypt food resilience project, with the EU contributing EU€100 million and the World Bank providing an EU€110 million soft loan.

According to the Supply Ministry, Feerum Misr — a Samcrete venture bringing technology from Poland’s Feerum — plans to make 80 percent of silo components locally within three years. It has committed to supplying parts for 1.4 million tonnes of capacity at fixed prices in local currency.

India’s grain processing sector handles more than 200 million tonnes of grain annually, supported by an extensive network of processing facilities. According to the event announcement, the industry includes more than 10,000 rice mills, 5,000 flour mills and chakki plants, 2,000 pulse mills, 2,000 spice grinding units and 2,000 oilseed crushing plants, alongside feed mills, soybean processors and coffee processing units.

As processors increasingly seek to improve productivity, product quality and operational efficiency, GrainTech India 2026 will showcase technologies covering grain cleaning, grading, milling, fortification, storage, automation, packaging and quality control. The exhibition is expected to attract businesses seeking modern solutions for both traditional operations and expanding processing facilities.

Gujarat’s position as a major producer of groundnut, sesame, castor and cumin, together with its growing pulses, maize and millet sectors, makes it a strategic location for the event. Saudi Arabia’s National Grain Supply Company (SABIL) has announced the transfer of ownership of National Grains Company from Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Co. (SALIC) to SABIL, marking the first step in implementing its new strategy to expand its business and strengthen its role in providing integrated logistics solutions for the agri-food sector.

The announcement was made during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in the presence of HE Eng Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen AlFadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and Chairman of SALIC.

According to SABIL, the ownership transfer strengthens its operational capabilities by combining its nationwide network of 14 branches with National Grains Company’s capabilities in the sourcing, handling and storage of grains and feed ingredients. The company states that this integration will expand its business activities and enhance supply chain efficiency.

“This milestone marks the beginning of a new phase of growth, focused on maximizing the value of both companies’ assets and expertise while developing integrated logistics solutions covering sourcing, handling, storage, and transportation,” said SABIL CEO Abdulrahman bin Saud AlOwais. He added that these efforts will support more efficient and sustainable supply chains and reinforce their contribution to the Kingdom’s food security ecosystem.

According to the company, National Grains Company will continue to operate as an independent legal entity, wholly owned by SABIL, strengthening operational and commercial integration between the two companies and supporting the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

The transfer follows SABIL’s launch of a new strategy in October 2026 to expand into agri-food logistics. In July 2026, the company discharged its first wheat vessel at the Port of NEOM, with a cargo of 66,000 tonnes.

Ipack Ima has launched its Scientific & Technical Committee, bringing together industry representatives, academics, professionals and stakeholders to provide new perspectives on the evolution of the processing and packaging sector, according to the exhibition organiser.

The Ipack Ima Scientific & Technical Committee was created to observe how supply chains and markets are changing, interpret the signals they send and anticipate the transformations affecting packaging and processing. It brings together cross-disciplinary expertise to address key issues reshaping the industry, including digitalisation and AI; sustainability, materials, regulations and energy; markets and internationalisation; safety, traceability and health; the relationship between technology users and manufacturers; and new business models.

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) is accepting speaker and session proposals for its 2027 Purchasing & Ingredient Suppliers Conference (PISC), taking place 16–18 March in Orlando, Florida, USA.

Animal feed and pet food industry professionals with fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and practical expertise are encouraged to submit proposals by 13 November. Sessions will be held under the theme ‘Resilient by Design,’ exploring emerging trends, challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the animal food industry.

“PISC brings together some of the brightest minds in the animal food industry, creating an opportunity to exchange ideas, strengthen relationships and tackle the challenges facing our businesses,” said Victoria Broehm, AFIA’s Vice President of Member Experience. “As we look ahead to 2027, we want to hear from industry experts who can challenge conventional thinking, share real-world experiences and offer actionable solutions that help our members build a stronger, more resilient future.”

According to the AFIA, proposed session topics may include ingredient markets, sourcing and economics; supply chain management and logistics; technology, innovation and artificial intelligence; procurement strategies and business operations; workforce development and leadership; and sustainability and global trade. Other emerging issues impacting the animal food industry are also welcome.

The association encourages submissions that are timely, educational and thought-provoking, with a focus on providing meaningful takeaways for attendees. Proposals should demonstrate the speaker’s subject matter expertise and offer practical information relevant to purchasing professionals, ingredient suppliers and other industry stakeholders.

The association stated that sessions intended primarily to promote a company, product or service will not be considered.

The Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) announces the agenda for Impact Unleashed 2026, taking place November 9-11 at the Limelight Hotel in Boulder, Colorado.

Guided by this year’s theme, “Rooted in Community. Rising to Meet Tomorrow.”, Impact Unleashed will bring together executives and sustainability leaders from across the pet industry to examine business and sustainability decisions that companies are navigating now.

The three-day agenda combines keynotes and candid leadership conversations with formats designed to get attendees beyond simply sitting and listening. Decision challenges, curated networking, student perspectives, and experiences outside the conference room will give attendees opportunities to compare approaches, hear what others have learned, and build relationships across the industry.

Construction has begun on a new flour mill in Ballycarney, County Wexford, Ireland, following an official sod-turning ceremony on 8 October, according to Slaney Flour.

The development, previously reported as an investment of more than EU€50 million, is a joint venture between Hemelter Ireland and Ballycarney Grain Ltd, operated by Wexford brothers Andrew and Raymond Kavanagh. According to the company, the Slaney Flour mill will combine international milling expertise with generations of Wexford farming and grain-handling experience.

The facility is expected to have a milling capacity of 300 tonnes per day, wheat storage of approximately 24,000 tonnes, an innovative square silo design, two intake bays and two outloading bays. According to Slaney Flour, the mill will use around 100,000 tonnes of grain per year to produce approximately 80,000 tonnes of flour.

The project aims to reduce Ireland’s reliance on imported flour. According to the company, the country imports around 260,000 tonnes of flour per year from the UK, Germany and France, and Hemelter Ireland currently supplies about 40,000 tonnes annually to the Irish bakery industry.

“Bringing flour production back to Ireland strengthens the entire bakery supply chain, resulting in less dependence on imports, and significantly less exposure to weather events or geopolitical risks,” said Marc Cordesmeyer, Managing Director of Hemelter Ireland. He added that the mill’s location near ports will provide diverse access to grain, including imports from Germany, Poland and Canada, while supporting the growing and use of Irish grain.

According to the company, trials conducted with the Kavanagh brothers on growing grain in Ireland have yielded promising results for flour production.

“This is exactly what we want to be doing for our tillage industry,” said Martin Heydon TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine. “The collaboration here around the food security piece, around building up the supply chains, and provenance in that regard as well, and adding value for our tillage farmers.”

Ballycarney Grain was established in 2011 as a grain drying and storage facility. It manages malting barley from 150 farmers across the south-east for Diageo Ireland through Boortmalt.

Hemelter Mühle is a family-owned German milling business with almost 140 years in flour milling and more than 20 years supplying the Irish bakery industry.

The project will also focus on efficient milling, traceability and the production of wheat bran for use in animal feed.

BoMill has received an additional order for an Adaptive Protein Control (APC) unit worth US$26,000 from a leading global malting group with operations in North America, according to the company.

The BoMill APC order was received in collaboration with Bratney, the company’s distributor in the United States. According to the company, the customer commissioned BoMill InSight at its US site in early September, including operator training and completion of the Site Acceptance Test. The system has been in continuous operation since commissioning.

One module was included in the original order and installation. According to the company, the customer has now ordered a second module to enable monitoring and control of both sorted products, A and B, providing further insights and supporting continued optimisation of the operation.

BoMill launched APC in June 2026, and the solution is already in use at several customer sites, as reported by the company.

“An additional order from an existing customer is a strong validation of our technology and the value our solutions provide,” said Andreas Jeppsson, CEO of BoMill AB. “We are pleased to develop the collaboration and support the customer in optimizing its operations.”

BoMill is a Swedish grain technology company specialising in precision sorting based on patented NIR technology. According to the company, the BoMill InSight™ platform analyses and sorts grain at industrial scale according to the internal qualities of each individual kernel, enabling customers to make better use of natural grain variation. It serves customers across the grain value chain, including grain handlers, maltsters and flour mills. The company is headquartered in Malmö, Sweden, and is listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market under the ticker BOMILL.

Quality Corn has commissioned Europe’s first hybrid maize mill combining pre-cooked maize flour for arepas and nixtamalized flour for tortillas in a single integrated facility. Developed in collaboration with Bühler, the five-story plant, completed in February 2025, can process up to 100,000 tonnes of maize annually and is designed to meet rising demand from Latin American cuisine across Europe.  

When Agustín Mariné Trías, founder and CEO of Quality Corn, took over the family farm in Huesca province, Spain, in the mid-1990s, he was convinced that the local maize crop was being undervalued in its traditional uses as cattle feed and fodder. Time proved Marine right as he first shifted into production of grains for the snack industry and then into milling maize to make flour, and semolina for beer brewers. 

More recently, Marine identified pre-cooked maize flour and nixtamalized flour as growth segments and decided to invest in a plant capable of producing both products. “Latin American culture has become part of daily life in Spain, and eating habits are evolving,” says Agustín Mariné Trías, Founder and CEO of Quality Corn. “We saw sustained demand and decided to position ourselves early in this segment.” 

A hybrid production concept 

The project marked a first for both Quality Corn and Bühler. While Bühler had developed hybrid concepts at near-industrial scale in Switzerland, this installation represents the first full industrial application of this kind in Europe. 

“This is a key plant for Bühler – our first hybrid project of this type in a real production environment,” says Nadeem Nashashibi, Area Sales Manager Milling at Bühler. “Quality Corn’s ambition to serve multiple emerging markets with one integrated solution aligned closely with our technology roadmap.” 

At the core of the plant is Bühler’s Prime Masa technology, which achieves the nixtamalization effect using maize grits and steam rather than whole kernels soaked in water. The system is integrated with pre-cooked flour production in a single facility. The existing Quality Corn mill supplies grits and semolina as raw material for the new processes. 

The 20,500-cubic-meter facility was completed in February 2025. At full capacity, Quality Corn targets annual production of 30,000 tonnes of pre-cooked and nixtamalized flour, 28,000 tonnes of semolina and 6000 tonnes of dry-milled maize flour. The company expects to reach peak output within two years. 

Flexibility enabled by digitalisation 

The plant was designed to allow production flexibility as market demand evolves. Both pre-cooked flour and nixtamalized flour require steam processing, but nixtamalization involves additional alkaline treatment. Integrating both processes demanded careful engineering to ensure operational efficiency without disrupting the existing mill. 

“With both processes conceptualised separately, the challenge was to create a configuration that allowed the customer to switch between products efficiently,” says Carlos Olivares, Technical Senior Sales Advisor Maize at Bühler. 

Central to this flexibility is Bühler’s Mercury MES (Manufacturing Execution System), which connects sensors and process controls across the plant. Operators can define and store recipes controlling parameters such as temperature, pressure, airflow and retention time. 

“With Mercury MES, the plant can be operated by one person,” says Luis Miguel Vivas Martínez, Head Miller at Quality Corn. “It allows us to monitor product parameters in real time and optimise production according to demand. The system identifies critical issues immediately and supports efficient energy use.” 

The plant is equipped entirely with Bühler technology, including flakers, steamers, sifters, de-stoners, Antares roller mills and a Sortex LumoVision optical sorter. The sorting system removes grains affected by mould and potential mycotoxins, supporting food safety compliance. 

Resource efficiency integrated into process design 

The hybrid configuration also reduces environmental impact. Compared to conventional nixtamalization processes, the steam-based Prime Masa technology enables water savings of 84 percent and reduces energy consumption by 52 percent. 

Instead of gas-fired heating systems, Quality Corn uses biomass boilers fuelled by post-harvest maize residues, forestry by-products and recycled wood materials. The facility is also equipped with solar panels, positioning the company to increase energy self-sufficiency as battery storage becomes more economically viable. “Technology and sustainability can work together to use resources more carefully,” says Mariné. 

Responding to shifting consumption patterns 

Maize has traditionally played a limited role in Spain’s milling industry, where wheat dominates. However, demographic shifts and changing consumer preferences are reshaping demand. With Spain’s immigrant population growing from one million in 1995 to nearly nine million in 2024 – including 4.2 million people from South and Central America and the Caribbean – demand for maize-based products such as arepas and tortillas has expanded significantly. Latin American food products have moved from niche ethnic markets into mainstream retail and foodservice channels. 

The hybrid mill positions Quality Corn to serve both domestic and broader European markets with locally produced pre-cooked and nixtamalized flours. For Bühler, the project provides a reference installation for hybrid maize processing concepts that combine flexibility, digitalisation and resource efficiency. 

As European food markets diversify and sustainability requirements tighten, integrated processing solutions that reduce water and energy consumption while enabling product flexibility are expected to gain relevance.

The current situation is still not as optimal as it was estimated. Above all, the health of exhibitors and visitors and the successful outcome of the event are most important to the organizers.

In light of the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, which has forced the Royal Thai Government to implement new strict measures to control the spread of the pandemic, and the delays of the vaccination programs in several Asian countries, VICTAM and VIV do not see the opportunity to realize a large-scale event on the short term. Looking at the ongoing travel restrictions from and to Asia, the organizers also believe that it is not possible to guarantee the event quality as we know them for. The postponement to the third quarter of 2022 is in the interest of the whole industry.

VICTAM Asia in co-location with Health & Nutrition Asia are thus rescheduled to September 7-9, 2022. The new venue selected is IMPACT Halls 9-10, in Bangkok, Thailand. The objective remains the same: to realize the Total Animal Feed and Health event.

The dates secured in September 2022 will give all stakeholders room to breathe and pay attention to other vital issues. The organizers’ mission is to present a strong, value-adding event to the industry with high benefits for all parties.

The 2^nd International Feed Technology Congress (IFTC 2022), organized by Wageningen University and the VICTAM Foundation will be held from 31 May/1 June 2022 during the VICTAM International 2022 in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

            After the successful 1^st edition, brought together 120 researchers from 26 different countries of all continents in Cologne, Germany, the 2^nd edition again will focus on bringing together researchers from universities, research institutions and industry to discuss the latest developments in feed technology. During the 1^st IFTC, valorization of raw materials by technology, current process developments and outcomes of feed technology with respect to feed formulation were major topics. A special Workshop was organized to discuss current and future issues of importance in feed manufacturing technology. Contributions and the results of the Workshop were recently published as a special issue of the ‘Animal Feed Science & Technology’ journal. The successful format of the 1^st IFTC will guarantee high quality presentations by world-renowned experts, open discussions, and publication of the latest scientific and practical developments in feed technology during the 2^nd IFTC.

The 2^nd IFT Congress will be held in Utrecht, the Netherlands during the VICTAM International Exhibition in 2022. The EU-28 (Greece, Malta and Luxembourg excluded) figures show that poultry feed production grew by 2%, whereas pig feed fell by 1% and cattle feed remained stable. On the pig feed side, after 2 years of moderate growth, the production decreased by 1% in 2016. This can partly be explained by the effects of African Swine Fever in Eastern Europe, which weighed heavily on the development of pork production, but also by low market prices for pork the first half of 2016 and large availability of feed grade cereals at low prices which benefitted on-farm mixing.

Against this backdrop, the European Biomass Association (AEBIOM) and its sectorial network the European Pellet Council (EPC) will host an International Pellet Conference on the 14th of June, 2017 in Cologne, Germany. The EU depends for 75% of its needs for protein-rich ingredients for feeding purpose on the global world markets. Some of these GM products, maize, soy and rapeseed are already commercialized abroad, others will be harvested and made available in the key exporting regions to the EU as from autumn 2014. Further delays in the EU authorization process may, therefore, lead to significant shortage and trade disruptions due to unavoidable presence of these GM events in our supplies of both GM and non-GM material. This would trigger uncertainty on import flows, supply chain disruptions and price hikes for basic food products and major feed ingredients as well as undermine the competitiveness of the EU food, feed and livestock sectors, if a decision is not taken in July 2014.

The 8 GM products have been deemed safe by the European Food Safety Authority (ESFA) and have reached the final stage of the risk management process. The decisions for the related EU import authorizations lay in the hands of the EU Commission: some of them are awaited since the end of 2013.

Thai Union Feedmill is also studying the use of enzymes in fish and shrimp feeds to increase nutrient digestion and maximize nutrient utilization of fish and shrimp.

Application of enzymes also enables the company to reduce the use of fish meal in aqua feeds in order to respond to customer’s concerns over sustainability of natural resources.

“The extrusion technology is more suitable in making both fish and shrimp feed as it treats the feed with high temperature and in a short time. We apply enzymes in the feed through a coating process, and this way the enzyme efficacy remains intact,” said Bunluesak Sorajjakit, managing director of Thai Union Feedmill.

Thai Union Feedmill installed an extruder from Wenger of the US at its feed mill in Samutsakhon province, about 90km west of Bangkok, late last year.

Supplies of extruders and other milling equipment from across the world will showcase their latest technology at VICTAM Asia and FIAAP Asia 2014 at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Bangkok (BITEC), Thailand during 8-10 April 2014.

The two events are Asia’s biggest and most important exhibitions dedicated to the region’s feed industry.

“This is a historic bulk delivery of US soybeans to Vietnam,” he said, adding there are three more bookings for US soybeans fully loaded in handymax vessels by importers in Vietnam later in the year.

Handymax is a type of cargoship for transporting goods in bulk such as grains with its capacity ranging from 40,000-50,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage).

The crushers in Vietnam process soybeans into soybean oil. A co-product from the processing is soybean meal, which is sold to feed milllers across the country. 

Soybean meal is the main source of amino acids, which are building blocks of proteins in animals. That is why it is one of the most important ingredients in animal feed.   

Soybean meal from different origins contains a varying level of nutrient contents, particularly in amino acids and energy.   

To provide the latest studies on soybeans in animal nutrition, the US Soybean Export Council will take part in the FIAAP Conference 2014 held alongside FIAAP Asia 2014 at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (Bitec) in Bangkok, Thailand on 9 April 2014.

The conference will also address various issues related to efficient use of novel feed additives for boosting health and growth of animals.

FIAAP Asia 2014 is an international event focused on feed ingredients and additives. It will take place at Bitec from 8-10 April 2014 together with VICTAM Asia 2014 and GRAPAS Asia 2014.

VICTAM is an exhibition dedicated to feed production technology, while GRAPAS focuses on grain and rice processing.

To shed light on this opportunity, Bioenergy International Magazine will organise a one-day conference titled ‘Pellets & Biomass Update Asia’ during Victam Asia 2014, an exhibition on feed and biomass technology that will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 8-10 April 2014.

The conference will look at how husks, shells, nuts, EFB’s (Empty Fruit Bunch), fines, dust or other residues from feed and food industries can provide internal energy cost reductions, waste management solutions or become valuable revenue streams.

The conference aims to describe the potentials, explore the opportunities and provide, for the region and the sector, relevant examples and case studies.

Victam Asia 2014 will be held alongside GRAPAS Asia 2014 (grain and rice processing) and FIAAP Asia 2014 (feed ingredients).

However, it is somewhat problematic in applying the right dose of enzymes due to their non-linear effects. Adding an enzyme at a wrong dose or at a higher level than those recommended by the manufacturer could lead to uneconomical results.

To fix this, Adifo, provider of software solutions for the feed industry from Belgium, has developed an enzyme module that defines the non-linear effects separate from the ingredient matrix, which is provided by the enzyme manufacturer as a reference for the user.

"The enzyme module that we develop is very unique. It sets up all the effects of the enzyme outside the feed formulation and the ingredient matrix," said Hans van der Wal, Adifo's Market Development Manager.

"This means that you just define in the system what the effect of the enzyme will be for a certain animal group, a certain nutrient and a certain ingredient. So, you can see right away what effect the enzyme has on energy, protein and other nutrients," he explained. 

Based on these unique features, the enzyme module of Bestmix accurately calculates the optimal inclusion rate of the enzyme.

Adifo will showcase its solutions for feed formulation at Victam Asia 2014, which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 8-10 April 2014.

Driving the demand is the power sector. The report said since 2012 the South Korean government has imposed power companies with a generating capacity of 500MW or more to use renewable energy by 10% within 2022. 

To meet this target, a number of power producers in South Korea are turning to import biomass pellets as they are the most economical solution.

The sector used 55,000 tonnes of pellets in 2012, and their use is expected to jump to 400,000 tonnes in 2013, the report said.

Russia was the biggest supplier of pellets to South Korea in 2012, supplying 34.1% of its total import, followed by Malaysia 25.1%, Vietnam 24.7% and Indonesia 7.3%.

With its abundance in agricultural by-products such as rice husks, corn stalks and cobs, straw and more, Vietnam has a great opportunity to produce pellet fuels serving the energy sector in South Korea and worldwide.

To get an update on the biomass pellet business in Asia, the Bioenergy International will organize a conference on “Pellets & Biomass Update Asia” on 10 April 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand.

It will take place at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre or Bitec. The conference is a part of VICTAM Asia 2014, FIAAP Asia 2014 and GRAPAS Asia 2014.

Besides, he said, the expander technology also offers other advantages such as improving feed hygiene due to its high temperature, short-time treatment.

Currently, Trang Wattana Farm produces about 1500 tonnes/month of pellet feeds for use in its farm that rears 2500 sows and produces 4500 commercial pigs.

On average, the pigs (18-100kg) achieve an average daily gain (ADG) of 780g/day and FCR 2.4-2.5.

Mr Rawat targets to increase the ADG of the commercial pigs to over 800g/day and lower the FCR to below 2.4. And he hopes that the expander feed could enable him to achieve this target.

He will visit FIAAP and Victam Asia 2014, which will be held during 8-10 April 2014 at Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) in Bangkok, Thailand, in search of the expansion technology and learn more about its benefits from suppliers, his fellow pig farmers and feed millers who gain experiences in this technology.

Issued by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in November 2013, the report said Indonesia produced sufficient corn for making feed. However, feed millers preferred to procure corn from abroad because of its superior quality.

“Poor post-harvest handling, inconsistency in quality and high moisture content make local corn unfavourable for feed millers,” the report said, citing the Indonesian Feed Millers Association.

USDA forecasts that corn demand for feed in Indonesia would increase 6.4% to 6.6 million tonnes in 2013/2014 crop year, which started in November 2013.

The country’s corn imports in the year would increase by 12% to 1.9 million tonnes. Over 70% of Indonesia’s corn imports come from India, followed by Argentina, Brazil and the US.

To optimise the use of locally produced corn in Indonesia, feed millers and traders need to join forces with farmers to improve post-harvest handling, storage and preservation.

As the key ingredient in poultry feed, improving quality of local corn would significantly decrease the cost of poultry production, and make chicken and eggs more available at a more affordable price. 

Indonesian feed millers, corn growers and traders can update the latest technology and knowhow in post-harvest handling, storage and preservation at Victam Asia, FIAAP Asia and Grapas Asia 2014.

"The competition in the south is very tough, but we're confident that we'll be able to penetrate into this market. We target to set up the new plant in Dong Nai because we've been selling a big volume of piglet feeds in the province and the farmers are very happy with the quality of our products," said Dao Manh Luong, Austfeed's CEO.

Austfeed started shipping its feeds for sales in Dong Nai and other southern provinces since the end of 2012. The feeds are shipped from its feed mill in the central province of Binh Dinh and stored at its warehouse in the province before distribution to the customers.

"It will be a big project in Dong Nai because we see a big potential in the southern market. We plan to build a large-scale feedmill and invest in the latest technology for the operations there," he said.

Austfeed started moving south since 2011 when it built a feed mill in the central province of Binh Dinh. 

Although livestock production in the central was not so well developed at that time, it saw a potential to grow the market there.

"Our feed sales in the central were very slow in the past, but they're increasing to the level that we have decided to build a feedmill there. The living standard of people there is getting better and meat consumption is increasing, boosting the demand for livestock feed," said Mr Luong.

Initially, the plant in Binh Dinh had a capacity of 50,000 tonnes/year, but its capacity had been fully utilised after a year of the operations.

This has led the company to install the second production line capacity 100,000 tonnes/year in 2012 with all the equipment supplied by Buhler of Switzerland.

"We made the right decision to expand in the central because livestock production in the region is growing up quickly. Many pig and chicken farms in the south are moving to the central as they can't find land to expand their operations due to rapid urbanisation in the south," he said.

To find out technology for expansion of his feed business, Mr Luong will visit FIAAP & VICTAM Asia 2014. The event will take place at the Bangkok Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) in Bangkok,Thailand during 8-10 April 2014.

It is Asia's largest trade exhibition for the feed industry. Suppliers of milling technology and related equipment for feed manufacturing from over the world, along with international suppliers of feed additives and ingredients will participate to showcase their latest innovations at the event.

The plant, which also produces aquaculture feeds, has been operating at its full capacity of 8800 tonnes a month.

"It's time for us to build a feed mill dedicated to petfood production as we're seeing our petfood sales growing leaps and bounds. We have set aside USD 50 million for building the plant that will be equipped with the latest production technology," said Mr Narongchai.

The new petfood plant of Betagro will be located on its production complex in Lopburi and its construction will begin in late 2013.

Betagro has set up a team to study the petfood market in Thailand in order to develop the products that fit the need of the customers in the future. The team was also sent to learn about petfood technology in Europe.

Mr Narongchai said Betagro sold about 3000 tonnes of petfood/month. This accounts as about 12% share of the petfood market in Thailand. 

Thailand will rank the eighth fastest-growing market for pet care, which also includes petfood, in the world between 2013 and 2018, projects Euromonitor International, a market research firm.

It said pet care sales in Thailand will grow by about USD 300 million in the period, driven by rising incomes and levels of pet ownership. Increasing number of pets in emerging markets such as China, Thailand and India are switching to commercial petfood. 

In 2013, petfood accounts for 77% of the global pet care sales of USD 96 billion, said Euromonitor.

The rise in feed demand is motivating feed millers in Indonesia to build more feed plants in 2013 and beyond.

Charoen Pokphand Indonesia, a subsidiary of Thailand agri-food conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc, is due to open its new feed mill in West Java, said Ong Mei Sian, directof of CP Indonesia.

Costing USD 30-40 million, the plant will have a capacity of 20,000 tonnes/month production of poultry feeds.

The company will build two more feed mills in Bali and Pandang in 2014 with an investment of USD 20 million for each plant.

CP Indonesia currently operates seven feed mills in Indonesia with a combined capacity of about four million tonnes.

In June 2013, InVivo Indonesia, a subsidiary of InVivo Group from France, opened its fifth feed mill in West Java, said managing director Felix Segalen.

Costing USD 15 million, the plant has a capacity of 150,000 tonnes/year and its capacity can be doubled in the future.

It has two production lines, one for livestock and the other for fish feeds. Stolz, French milling equipment manufacturer, supplied its latest technology for the plant, which is one of the most modern feed mills in Indonesia.

Stolz as well as other milling equipment suppliers from over the world will showcase its latest technology at VICTAM Asia 2014, which, along with FIAAP Asia,  is Asia's largest trade exhibition dedicated to the feed industry.

Reaching the top
Following an intense ten-month period of training, Ernst Nef presented the graduates of this year’s course their Diplomas in the Hotel Uzwil, qualifying them as Feed Production Engineers or confirming their attendance of the course. In his entertaining address, Ernst Nef emphasized the high significance of training and continuing education. He expressed his admiration for the students’ decision to go back to school: “By making this far-reaching decision, you took up a challenge that you have now successfully met. Today, you have reached the top. With the knowledge you have acquired and your great commitment, you now have the right instruments available to satisfy the rigorous requirements of safe and economical animal feed production.” He said that the goal was on the one hand to meet consumers’ needs for hygienic feeds that are safe for humans and animals alike. On the other hand, he said that companies were increasingly facing the challenge of producing and marketing feeds more efficiently and especially more responsibly while meeting legal regulations and directives.

A Russian as the best in class
Ernst Nef personally handed each graduate their diploma, adding some amusing personal anecdote to his congratulations. It has become a tradition for the SFT to distinguish the student with the highest grade during each diploma-awarding ceremony. This year the award in the form of a commemorative plaque went to the Russian Grigory Khoroshchenko, who attended the course in German – a foreign language for him. Grigory Khoroshchenko works as an Area Manager Feed & Biomass in the Bühler branch office in Moscow. Peter Hofer, Vice President of the School Board of the SFT, congratulated the best in class for his outstanding average grade of 5.54 (out of 6) and handed him the traditional pewter plaque.

New concept
The Diploma Course on Feed Manufacturing Technology was held for the second time on the basis of a new concept. The course starts in the spring with a 15-week preparatory correspondence course. This is followed by a four-week intensive course in Uzwil. In the autumn, the second block is then held with a preparatory correspondence course of the same length and the final intensive block in Uzwil. In the two preparatory courses, the students must deal with 21 different subjects. During the two intensive courses, they must pass a total of 14 written exams. The highlight and completion of each individual block are the two verbal examinations in the core subjects in front of a panel of experts. The new concept reduces the students’ absence from their jobs.
The 33^rd Specialist Course in Feed Manufacturing Technology will start in January 2015 and be held in English.

Focus on practice
The SFT is a not-for-profit association that is recognized by the Swiss Feed Manufacturers Association (VSF) as an institution of training and continuing education. The goal of the SFT is to impart practice-oriented specialist knowledge on feed production to professionals from the feed manufacturing industry and related industries. Successful completion of the Diploma Course enables graduates to understand all the modern production processes in a feed manufacturing plant and to apply them meaningfully in practice. Bühler, the international Technology Group, is the partner of the SFT. Analysts said the data may lessen the pressure on the central bank to ease its monetary policies to spur growth.

"Overall, the Thailand economy is in a pretty good shape right now," Rahul Bajoria, an economist with Barclays Capital told the BBC.

"It is unlikely that the central bank will cut rates anytime soon. The numbers clearly indicate that there is no urgent need to do that."

Inflation concerns

The floods in Thailand had an impact on some of the biggest industrial areas and resulted in many factories being shut.

That hurt Thailand's exports, one of the biggest drivers of its economic growth.

To make matters worse, a slowdown in demand from key global markets also hurt the export sector.

As a result, Thailand's government implemented various steps to help stoke domestic demand in an attempt to offset the decline in exports and sustain growth in the economy.

It raised minimum wages in various parts of the country, in some areas by as much as 40%.

The government also announced plans to spend 2tn Thai baht ($65bn; £40bn) on infrastructure projects after the devastating floods.

For its part, Thailand's central bank, the Bank of Thailand, cut interest rates in October last year, bringing down its key rate to 2.75% from 3%.

Analysts said that given the strong domestic demand and increased government spending, a rise in consumer prices remained a concern and may prompt the central bank to keep rates on hold in the short term.

"Domestic demand momentum is certainly picking up and this will spill over into 2013," said Eugene Leow of DBS Bank.

"The focus will likely turn towards inflation, especially considering the robust growth numbers."

Today, FEFAC states: "While pig feed production dropped by 2%, cattle and poultry feed have seen their production grow respectively by +1.5 and +1%. As a consequence, poultry feed consolidated its position of leading segment of EU compound feed production slightly above pig feed".

According to FEFAC, the most important factors which weighed on EU feed demand in 2012 were the still fragile economic situation of the pig sector and soaring feed material costs.

"Among the largest producing countries, Germany and UK performed rather well, with annual growth slightly above 2%, while France and Poland remained stable and Spain, Italy and the Netherlands saw their production fall at rates between -1 and -2%. Production of poultry feed in Southern Europe was affected in particular by the implementation of the new welfare standards for laying hens", stated FEFAC.

"The high cereal prices over the last two years contributed to improving the competitive market position of industrial compound feed production vs. home mixing. However, this gain was offset to a certain extent by the development of alternative pig feeding strategies based on roughly grinded feed and liquid feeding. As a result, Germany’s position as leading EU country in terms of total compound feed production before France was strengthened, with Spain scoring third place", added FEFAC.

For 2013, FEFAC expects a stabilisation in poultry feed production, a further reduction in pig feed production (-1%) and a slight increase in cattle feed demand (+1%).

"Further market uncertainties are linked to the impact of the implementation of the new group-housing requirements for sows. Overall, compound feed production is expected to remain unchanged vs. 2012", commented FEFAC.

FEFAC also warned that, with agricultural commodity prices expected to stay high, the average cost for supply of feed materials could be higher in 2013, as compared to 2012.

"After two major crop failures for soybean in South and North America, a record harvest for soybean is expected in Brazil in 2013, but its positive impact may be undermined by the storage and logistics issues it could trigger. On the cereals side, the uncertainty is still important regarding the quantity and quality of the next harvest, due to bad weather conditions in major exporting countries", it said.

The SFIS project is designed to measure and establish the role of specialty feed ingredients on the environmental impact of livestock production and the Scientific Council will provide independent expert advice on the project during the course of the work in order to ensure scientifically robust inputs in the analysis and prepare the ground for a future peer reviewed publication of the project output once it is completed.

Prof. Dr. Matthias Finkbeiner, Chair of Sustainable Engineering at the Technical University Berlin and Chairman of the SFIS Scientific Council, welcomes the “involvement of globally renowned experts in such an important project, which aims to contribute to global activities in the area of the environmental effect of livestock production.” Prof. Finkbeiner added “the Members of the Council would provide expert review for results of the projects, which will be shared with international stakeholders and with feed chain operators in order to encourage more sustainable livestock production globally.”

India’s millers have much to add to the efficient production of feedingstuffs in this diverse 1.3 billion population market. "These global participants' best practices have raised the standards and practices of the industry," said Frost & Sullivan Industry analyst Anjaneya Reddy. "However, with the outlook for the Asia Pacific economy still dim, feed suppliers have had to cut costs to maintain their customer base."

Farmers also prefer fresh feed over fortified or supplemented fodder for animals, as they have access to fresh feed across seasons. Additionally, farmers prefer alternatives to fortified food because their higher prices tend to shrink their already thin margins.

Concrete measures by the industry and the government to market the efficacy benefits of feed ingredients to farmers will boost adoption and expand the market.

"Suppliers must focus on creating awareness of the benefits of feed fortification, such as its ability to extend shelf-life, keep animals in good health, and provide quality products like meat and eggs," noted Reddy. "Organisations and various associations could also customize ingredients to suit the needs of the farmers, as well as take advantage of the safe image of various feed ingredients for branding purposes."

This is annual show organised by EAC, a professional organiser and the Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers Association with the support of other poultry associations and including the Indian feed association - CLFMA.

The show comprised approximately 200 exhibitors, mainly Indian. The exhibitors were showing a diverse cross section of products from incubators, feed supplements, poultry housing, and a few feed equipment manufacturers.

From their observations it was clear that the Indian feed market is expanding in all of their sectors - poultry, dairy, aqua and even pet. The use of manufactured feed is and will increase as the existing millers and new companies invest in up-dating plant or build new mills. Our staff understood from exhibitors and from their own observations that Poultry India is the strongest and most visited livestock event in India.

The current broiler market is depressed which meant that there were fewer visitors to this show this year, however the quality of the visitors remained high. The 2011 show attracted 25,000+ visitors, though there were fewer this year, the majority of exhibitors accepted that this was due to the depressed market.

During their conversations many of the Indian and international exhibitors expressed an interest and enthusiasm for the 2014 FIAAP and VICTAM exhibitions that are taking place in Bangkok from the 8 - 10 April 2014.

They were also told that India and Vietnam were now the top exporters of rice. The ASEAN Rice Summit was discussed alongside the GRAPAS Asia 2014 exhibition and conference. The Secretary General thought the Summit was an excellent opportunity for meeting with other ASEAN Rice Associations and Government Ministries and immediately agreed to attend and support both the GRAPAS exhibition and the Rice Summit as well.

Mr Askam Sudi told them that the Association had a new President, Mr. Ketua Umum, who was unfortunately away at the time of the meeting, however that the Association was already aware of the ASEAN Feed Summit and that the Association was committed to participating.
