Amandus Kahl celebrated its 150th anniversary from September 3 to 5, 2026, in Reinbek, Germany, with a programme highlighting the company’s engineering expertise, future technologies, and continued investment in its operations. The official anniversary ceremony on September 4 brought together more than 250 guests from politics, business, industry, and the company’s international network of customers and partners.

The celebrations were held under the motto “150 Years of Innovation – Tradition with a Future” and included discussions on technological developments, digitalization, automation, data-supported process solutions, and collaboration across the KAHL Group.

Founded in Hamburg in 1876 as Wendte & Kahl, Amandus Kahl has developed into an international manufacturer of machines and process plants, with particular expertise in pelletizing and process technology for the compound feed industry. Its portfolio includes flat-die pellet mills, expanders, extruders, pan grinder mills, crushing roller mills, dryers, coolers, and fluidized bed plants. The company also serves the biomass and recycling industries.

EXPERTISE IN FEED PROCESSING
Pelletizing remains a central area of Amandus Kahl’s activities in the feed sector. The KAHL flat-die pellet mill is the company’s core product, while the KAHL Expander has been used in feed processing for more than 30 years. These technologies form part of the company’s broader process-engineering expertise, which covers the processing and conditioning of raw materials for different industrial applications.

During the anniversary programme, Amandus Kahl also highlighted its plans for the future of its Reinbek operations. The company is continuing to invest in the site, including more than €10 million for a new technical center. According to Joachim Behrmann, spokesperson for the company’s management, the investment reflects Amandus Kahl’s commitment to Germany as a manufacturing location and to maintaining close relationships with customers.

INVESTING IN FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES
Amandus Kahl is the flagship sister company of the KAHL Group, which comprises nine companies with different fields of activity and expertise and employs approximately 900 people. The anniversary programme also highlighted collaboration between the group’s companies and across international markets.

The three-day programme began with a “Visions & Solutions Day” on September 3, bringing together company representatives and employees from around the world to discuss technical developments and new applications. The official anniversary ceremony followed on September 4 at the company’s headquarters in Reinbek. The programme concluded with an internal celebration for employees, former employees, and their families on September 5.

A Nofima PhD study shows how fish by-products can be combined with plant proteins. The approach could improve the nutritional value of plant-based foods while creating new uses for marine side streams.

A PhD study by Nofima researcher Liv Helene Kolberg Sickel has shown that side streams from cod and salmon processing could be combined with plant proteins to develop food products with improved nutritional value. The research, which examined the use of marine side streams in high-moisture extrusion cooking, found that processing conditions and ingredient ratios play an important role in achieving the desired texture.

Sickel defended her PhD thesis, titled “Marine side streams in high-moisture extrusion cooking,” at the University of Bergen (UiB), Norway, on 11 September 2026. The work was carried out at the food research institute Nofima and UiB as part of the HybridFoods project, which focuses on novel texturized hybrid foods in response to sustainability and health challenges.

The study investigated whether proteins recovered from fish processing could be combined with plant-based proteins to produce foods with suitable nutritional and textural properties. Salmon- and cod-based ingredients from side streams were combined with pea protein and wheat gluten and processed through extrusion, a technology commonly used to create structured, meat-like textures.

FISH INGREDIENTS AFFECT TEXTURE
The research found that increasing the proportion of fish-based ingredients generally resulted in a softer product texture. However, the effect varied depending on the type of fish ingredient and the processing conditions.

In experiments using salmon protein hydrolysate, the researchers linked the softer texture to the way the protein had been processed. The proteins had been broken down into amino acids and small peptides, which have properties that allow them to interact with water. As a result, the hydrolysate could have an effect similar to adding water to the dough during processing.

This indicates that protein concentrate could partly replace water in some formulations while increasing the nutritional content without substantially changing the final texture.

A similar softening effect was observed when cod protein powder was incorporated into the formulations. Increasing the processing temperature, however, helped compensate for this effect. At a fish inclusion level of 25%, the resulting products achieved a texture comparable to that of the plant-based reference product.

MAKING BETTER USE OF FISH RESOURCES
The findings point to an opportunity to use more of the raw material already entering the food chain. During the processing of whole cod and salmon into fillets, up to 60% of the fish can remain outside the fillet. These side streams, including heads, backbones and skin, are currently used largely for animal feed, fertiliser and biofuel.

According to the study, their protein, mineral and fatty acid content also makes them relevant for food applications. Combining these marine ingredients with plant proteins could therefore provide a way to improve the nutritional profile of plant-based foods while increasing the value obtained from harvested fish.

Sickel said that resource utilisation was a key motivation behind the research. “By creating opportunities to use more protein from fish we have already harvested, we could give the fishing industry an incentive to take better care of the raw material and use it in food. These side streams consist of valuable marine nutrients that can bring positive health benefits,” she said.

POTENTIAL FOR HYBRID FOOD PRODUCTS
The research forms part of the HybridFoods project, “Novel texturized hybrid foods targeting future sustainability and health challenges in the Anthropocene.” The results could support the development of hybrid food products that combine marine and plant protein sources, including products such as burgers and nuggets.

For the food industry, the study also provides information on how ingredient ratios and extrusion conditions can influence the structure and texture of these products. This could help guide the use of fish side-stream ingredients in formulations designed to meet both nutritional and sensory requirements.

Sickel holds a master’s degree in physical chemistry from the University of Bergen and conducted her PhD research at Nofima and UiB. Her supervisors were Tor Andreas Samuelsen and Åge Oterhals of Nofima, together with Tore Skodvin of UiB and Atze van der Goot of Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

Cermaq has appointed Silvia Segnini as Chief Financial Officer and Snorre Jonassen as Chief Operating Officer, while consolidating technology innovation across landbased, seawater and sustainability into a single team led by Dr Bendik Fyhn Terjesen as Chief Technology Officer.

The changes follow the integration of operations from Grieg Seafood in Finnmark and Canada, and are intended to strengthen alignment, coordination and innovation across Cermaq’s regions.

Segnini joined Cermaq in 2007 and has held roles spanning treasury, tax, accounting, insurance, mergers and acquisitions, and post-merger integration.

“Silvia knows this company inside and out, and she has played a significant role in building the finance function we have today,” said CEO Steven Rafferty.

The COO position is newly established at group level. Jonassen moves from his role as Integration Director in Cermaq Group and has previously held senior management positions in Cermaq Norway. The role will facilitate best practice in operations across all regions and oversee fish health and welfare, fish feed and communication.

Technology innovation in landbased and seawater production, together with sustainability, will be brought together in one team that also covers digitalisation and artificial intelligence.

“The purpose is to drive technology development as a growth enabler across all operational areas,” Rafferty said.

Dr Terjesen will head the team as CTO and will continue to report to the CEO. He will not be part of the Global Management Team.

Integration remains a major task, particularly in Canada, where Grant Cumming will lead the work as Canada Integration Director.

“These changes will strengthen the Group office as a resource centre for the operating companies and make the Global Management Team more effective in pursuing our growth targets and strategy objectives,” Rafferty said.

IFF’s new phytase technology, Omni-Bos™ PHY, is designed to help dairy producers extract more value from their feed. The technology will initially be introduced across four regions, supporting efficiency, profitability and sustainability.

IFF, one of the global leaders in flavors, fragrances and health and biosciences, has launched Omni-Bos™ PHY, a novel phytase enzyme designed specifically for dairy cattle. The company states that the technology helps producers improve nutrient utilization and feed efficiency by unlocking nutrients already present in feed, enabling cows to derive greater value from existing feed ingredients. Omni-Bos™ PHY will initially launch in the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions.

Global milk production is projected to grow 2% annually over the coming decade, increasing pressure on producers to improve productivity while managing feed costs and sustainability targets. Phytate, a naturally occurring compound found in many feed ingredients, can bind nutrients and reduce their availability to the animal. While phytase technology has been widely used in poultry and swine production for decades, its effectiveness in dairy cattle has historically been limited.

“Traditional phytase enzymes were not designed to withstand the unique digestive conditions of dairy cattle,” said Ester Vinyeta, Innovation Director, Animal Nutrition & Health for IFF Health & Biosciences. “Omni-Bos PHY was specifically developed for ruminants and is designed to remain active where it can unlock nutrients that would otherwise remain inaccessible. This enables dairy producers to extract more nutritional value from existing feed ingredients while reducing nutrient losses.”

By helping cows utilize more of the protein, phosphorus and minerals already present in feed, Omni-Bos™ PHY can reduce reliance on supplemental phosphorus and protected amino acids while supporting the use of alternative protein sources. In his new role, Loop is responsible for the company’s commercial activities and, together with the management team, will drive the next strategic steps for growth. His key responsibilities include further developing Leiber’s commercial strategy and strengthening sales, customer relationships and business development, with a particular focus on internationalisation and tapping into additional market potential, as according to the company.

Loop brings many years of international leadership and sales experience. Before joining Leiber, he worked for the Stern-Wywiol Group, including seven years in Singapore, where he was responsible for business activities in the Asia-Pacific region. He subsequently served as Regional Director for the EMEA region, including its international subsidiaries.

“I am very much looking forward to actively shaping Leiber’s future direction,” said Loop. “The company has a strong market position and exciting prospects. The Leiber Norman Loop appointment strategically strengthens the company’s commercial leadership. The company recently announced the acquisition of a site in Romania, marking another step in strengthening its international presence. It states that both measures are part of its long-term corporate strategy and create the foundation for further expanding its international market position.

Leiber GmbH is a supplier of brewers’ yeast products and yeast-derived ingredients used in animal nutrition, including feed and aquafeed applications.

Will be used by Cefetra for storage, handling of up to 65,000 tonnes

Imas has successfully commissioned a 720 tonnes-per-day flour mill in Central Africa, marking the third complete project delivered for the same customer in the food and retail industries.

The new mill has been operative since September 2026 and represents a significant addition to the region’s grain processing infrastructure, with an annual wheat processing capacity of 238,000 tonnes, as reported by the company. The project follows the company’s first 300 TPD flour mill built for the customer in 2021 and a second 160 TPD mill in 2024, bringing the total project capacity delivered to 1180 TPD.

According to Imas, the milling section is designed as a single unit comprising 36 roller mill machines, six eight-section plansifters and eight single-deck purifiers. The greenfield project was completed on a turnkey basis, including engineering, manufacturing, installation and commissioning services. The steel construction mill building was also designed, manufactured and built by the Turkish company.

The mill is managed via an end-to-end automation system, from wheat intake to flour packaging. According to the company, the fully integrated automation architecture enables centralised plant management and enhances operational efficiency and traceability, with comprehensive reporting features including real-time production, yield and consumption data. The system also allows Imas’ after-sales team to connect to the plant remotely for troubleshooting, technical assistance and check-ups.

Imas is a Turkish manufacturer of grain and feed milling machinery with over 35 years of experience. It has reportedly completed more than 500 projects across five continents and over 110 countries. The company was ranked among Turkey’s Top 5 Food Machinery Exporters in 2026.

China’s domestic production of fishmeal and fish oil resumed in August. Initial estimates indicate that domestic output through July 2026 was higher than levels recorded a year earlier, although the availability of fish raw material since August remains to be observed.

In China, August is the peak of summer and a critical growth period for aquaculture species. It is also a challenging period, with increased management difficulties and higher production risks. Recent extreme weather events, including typhoons, have further disrupted coastal aquaculture operations.

Overall aquaculture feed demand has entered its seasonal peak, although demand varies considerably between species.

For specialty species such as largemouth bass, snakehead and yellow catfish, farm-gate prices remain weak. Market data shows that stocking volumes for these species declined year on year during the first half of 2026, suggesting that feed demand and fishmeal consumption may weaken during the grow-out stage.

In contrast, feed and fishmeal demand for high-value species with stronger profit margins remains stable or is showing signs of improvement. Nevertheless, persistently high farming costs combined with lower supply have contributed to an overall year-on-year decline in fishmeal consumption.

In China’s pig sector, fishmeal consumption also remains subdued, primarily due to weaker demand for piglet and commercial piglet feed. Given current market conditions, fishmeal demand from the pig sector is unlikely to see a meaningful recovery during the remainder of 2026.

ADM has inaugurated its Tianjin Early Nutrition Aquafeed Facility, which is now operational and primarily produces early nutrition aquafeed products for fish and shrimp targeting hatchery and nursery stages. The facility expands ADM’s local manufacturing capabilities in China and strengthens coordination among its APAC research and development (R&D) resources, Chinese production facilities and global aquaculture applications.

At the inauguration, ADM leaders including Gerald Wilflingseder, president, Animal Nutrition, APAC; Peggy Quan, president, ADM China; Helen Hu, president, Nutrition, APAC; Eric Carfi, General Manager, Animal Nutrition, China; and Marc Campet, Technical Sales Director, Animal Nutrition, APAC, joined representatives from relevant departments of the Tianjin Municipal Government, the Binhai New Area Government and Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone Administrative Commission, as well as customers from APAC markets including China, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, to mark the facility’s opening.

Focused on hatchery and nursery stages

Following its long-established facility in Belgium, the Tianjin site is ADM’s second production facility dedicated to aquaculture hatchery and nursery feeds, reflecting 25 years of international expertise in early-stage nutrition. The facility applies ADM’s global quality standards to local production in China.

It has an annual design capacity of approximately 5,000 metric tonnes and can produce products in particle sizes ranging from 50 microns to 3 millimetres. The facility uses cold micro-extrusion and marumerisation to produce highly water-stable microparticles that help maintain nutrient integrity in water, supporting access to critical nutrients for fish and shrimp throughout the feeding period.

Leveraging Tianjin’s port and location advantages, the facility will serve customers in China and other APAC markets, further strengthening ADM’s China manufacturing capabilities and improving supply efficiency across APAC.

China has a large aquaculture industry. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the country’s aquaculture output exceeded 63 million metric tonnes in 2025, up 4.38 per cent year on year. As aquaculture production continues to expand, the industry is placing increasing attention on seedstock quality and nutrition management during the early life stages.

Connecting global R&D with local production

ADM has 25 years of expertise in aquaculture hatchery and nursery nutrition, with its business in this field spanning more than 60 countries and regions. ADM’s APAC Aquaculture R&D Center in Vietnam has long conducted fish and shrimp nutrition research and application trials, supporting formulation development, product validation and research into aquaculture applications.

‘With the Tianjin facility now operational, ADM has further strengthened coordination among its APAC R&D resources, local production in China and market applications. The Vietnam R&D centre provides research and trial support, while the Tianjin facility carries out local production of hatchery feeds. Drawing on farming needs and application feedback from China and other APAC markets, ADM continues to advance formulation validation and product optimisation,’ said Marc Campet, Technical Sales Director, Animal Nutrition, APAC, ADM.

The Tianjin facility will manufacture specialised hatchery feeds, with a range of products including MeM and MeM Prime, for customers in China and other APAC markets. The MeM range is primarily used during the late larval and nursery stages. It uses a cold micro-extrusion process and offers different particle sizes for different growth stages to accommodate feeding characteristics and nutritional requirements during the nursery stage.

During the hatchery and nursery stages, fish and shrimp develop rapidly, while their feed intake capacity is limited and their nutritional requirements are more specific. Different species and growth stages have varying requirements for feed particle size, palatability, nutrient supply and water stability, creating a need for specialised product design, production processes and application support.

Beyond specialised hatchery feeds, ADM also provides specialty feeds, feed ingredients, feed additives, probiotics, premixes and related technical support for later grow-out stages. With the addition of hatchery feed capacity at the Tianjin facility, ADM’s aquaculture nutrition products and services in China now extend further into the early stages of aquaculture production, creating a more complete portfolio of products and services from hatchery and nursery through grow-out.

Focused on hatchery and nursery stages

Following its long-established facility in Belgium, the Tianjin site is ADM’s second production facility dedicated to aquaculture hatchery and nursery feeds, reflecting 25 years of international expertise in early-stage nutrition. The facility applies ADM’s global quality standards to local production in China.

It has an annual design capacity of approximately 5,000 metric tonnes and can produce products in particle sizes ranging from 50 microns to 3 millimetres. The facility uses cold micro-extrusion and marumerisation to produce highly water-stable microparticles that help maintain nutrient integrity in water, supporting access to critical nutrients for fish and shrimp throughout the feeding period.

Leveraging Tianjin’s port and location advantages, the facility will serve customers in China and other APAC markets, further strengthening ADM’s China manufacturing capabilities and improving supply efficiency across APAC.

China has a large aquaculture industry. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the country’s aquaculture output exceeded 63 million metric tonnes in 2025, up 4.38 per cent year on year. As aquaculture production continues to expand, the industry is placing increasing attention on seedstock quality and nutrition management during the early life stages.

Connecting global R&D with local production

ADM has 25 years of expertise in aquaculture hatchery and nursery nutrition, with its business in this field spanning more than 60 countries and regions. ADM’s APAC Aquaculture R&D Center in Vietnam has long conducted fish and shrimp nutrition research and application trials, supporting formulation development, product validation and research into aquaculture applications.

The Tianjin facility will manufacture specialised hatchery feeds, with a range of products including MeM and MeM Prime, for customers in China and other APAC markets. The MeM range is primarily used during the late larval and nursery stages. It uses a cold micro-extrusion process and offers different particle sizes for different growth stages to accommodate feeding characteristics and nutritional requirements during the nursery stage.

During the hatchery and nursery stages, fish and shrimp develop rapidly, while their feed intake capacity is limited and their nutritional requirements are more specific. Different species and growth stages have varying requirements for feed particle size, palatability, nutrient supply and water stability, creating a need for specialised product design, production processes and application support.

Beyond specialised hatchery feeds, ADM also provides specialty feeds, feed ingredients, feed additives, probiotics, premixes and related technical support for later grow-out stages. With the addition of hatchery feed capacity at the Tianjin facility, ADM’s aquaculture nutrition products and services in China now extend further into the early stages of aquaculture production, creating a more complete portfolio of products and services from hatchery and nursery through grow-out.

Hendrix Genetics Swine was established following the merger of Hypor and Danish Genetics, bringing together the operations of both organizations. The company was formed through a joint venture between Hendrix Genetics and its Danish partners, combining breeding, multiplication, and distribution activities within a single swine organization.

The transition to full ownership by Hendrix Genetics represents the next step in the continued integration and development of the swine business and reflects the progress made since the formation of the partnership nearly two years ago.

MC Mühlenchemie has introduced its Pastazym HighProtein series, a platform of functional enzyme systems designed for the production of protein-enriched pasta, according to the company.

The platform combines enzyme systems, the MC Protein Calculator and the Pasta Lab in Ahrensburg to enable pasta makers to reach 18 percent or higher protein content without compromising texture, sensory quality, cooking stability or processability. According to MC Mühlenchemie, the platform offers scalable solutions for protein contents up to 30 percent, with recipes from 18 to 30 percent protein validated in the company’s Pasta Lab under near-industrial conditions.

According to the report ‘High Protein Food & Beverage in Europe’ by Innova Market Insights (May 2026), protein is the most important food trend of the decade, with one in ten new foods in Europe already bearing a protein claim.

As protein content rises, the behaviour of pasta dough changes fundamentally, the company states. Alternative protein sources such as wheat germ and legumes often overpower the typical pasta flavour and alter the characteristic yellow colour, while raw material costs are higher and processes less consistent. Typical issues include unstable doughs, difficult extrusion, higher susceptibility to breakage, rough surfaces, sticky textures and variable cooking stability.

“At protein contents up to about 22 percent the challenges can generally be dealt with using targeted enzyme technology. At higher percentages the dough behaviour changes considerably, making additional support of the gluten network beneficial,” said Jana Russnak, Head of Pasta Applications at MC Mühlenchemie.

According to MC Mühlenchemie, the platform is divided into two approaches: for recipes containing up to 22 percent protein, the company offers purely enzyme-based solutions; for higher protein targets, the approach combines enzymes with wheat gluten to further stabilise the dough structure and limit the proportion of flavour-intensive protein flours.

Alongside this was the renowned CHOPIN Technologies range of cereal and flour testing equipment, including systems that assess dough rheology, starch damage, and flour quality, ensuring every tonne of flour meets the highest standards before it reaches the customer.

AFIA has brought together 149 industry professionals at its 2026 Liquid Feed Symposium in Kansas City. The program explored policy, animal nutrition, markets and emerging trends.

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has hosted its annual Liquid Feed Symposium (LFS) in Kansas City, Mo., U.S., bringing together 149 industry professionals to discuss the latest developments affecting the liquid feed industry. Planned by AFIA’s Liquid Feed Committee, the symposium featured expert perspectives on policy, animal nutrition, markets, weather and emerging industry trends. As attendees gathered in Kansas City on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the AFIA also took a moment to reflect on and honor the lives lost, first responders and the resilience that persists in communities across the country.

“The Liquid Feed Symposium continues to be an important opportunity for our industry to come together, exchange ideas and learn from experts about the issues that directly affect their businesses,” said Leah Wilkinson, AFIA’s Chief Policy Officer. “This year’s program brought together practical science, policy and market insights that attendees can take back to their operations, while also celebrating the people and relationships that have helped move the liquid feed industry forward.”

This year’s program opened with a welcome from the American Royal Association before turning to policy and legislative issues, supply chain vulnerabilities and broader trends affecting animal agriculture. Science-focused sessions explored vitamin and mineral requirements, cattle health and nutrition, and vitamin supplementation and stability in liquid feed preparations. Attendees also heard practical perspectives on customer troubleshooting, feeding strategies and cattle and carcass weight trends. During the symposium, the AFIA Liquid Feed Committee inducted John Bauerle into the AFIA Liquid Feed Hall of Fame, recognizing his lifelong contributions to the cattle and liquid feed industries. Bauerle spent his career working throughout the liquid feed sector, most recently with High Plains Feed and Custom Tech Feeds, part of the Brookover family of companies. Raised on a ranch in Amite, La., U.S., Bauerle maintained close ties to the cattle industry throughout his career and previously served on the AFIA Liquid Feed Committee, sharing his industry experience and leadership with his peers.

“John’s career reflects the kind of dedication and commitment that have helped shape the liquid feed industry into what it is today. His decades of experience, deep connection to the cattle industry and willingness to share his knowledge with others have made a lasting impact on his colleagues and the industry as a whole. ForFarmers, through its Polish subsidiary Tasomix, has agreed to acquire 100% of STW SA, a feed producer in Eastern Poland. The transaction includes STW SA’s feed business and production facility, with completion expected in early 2027.

ForFarmers, through its Polish subsidiary Tasomix, has entered into an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in STW SA, an animal feed producer based in Sokołów Podlaski, Eastern Poland. The transaction is part of ForFarmers’ growth strategy to expand its position in the Polish market, particularly in the poultry, ruminant and swine sectors. The acquisition is subject to approval by the Polish competition authority, with completion expected at the beginning of 2027.

STW SA: MODERN FEED PRODUCTION SITE
STW SA was founded in 2016 and is owned by the Leszczyński family. The company operates a modern feed production facility in Eastern Poland and is also active in feed logistics and poultry farming. According to the company, following recent investments, its annual feed production capacity has increased to approximately 270,000 tonnes. With a workforce of 76 employees, STW SA has developed expertise and technical know-how in feed formulation.

FORFARMERS AND STW SA HAVE EXISTING COOPERATION
Tasomix, which has been operating in Poland for over 35 years and has been part of ForFarmers since 2018, has been collaborating with STW SA for several years. As part of this partnership, STW SA already manufactures for Tasomix.

“This acquisition, in which we are acquiring the production site and the product and customer portfolio, is a good addition to Tasomix’s activities in eastern Poland and creates scope for further growth. In addition, we will benefit from STW SA’s knowledge and experience and realise efficiency gains in production and logistics. The introduction of the Infinity Electronic Test System represents a significant advancement in routine testing, according to Mettler Toledo. Automation in production performance monitoring simplifies test routines, improves consistency and accuracy, and is up to three times faster than manual testing. The M50 R-Series can also run tests automatically without operator intervention.

Embedded Wi-Fi supports secure and simplified connectivity, giving users rapid access to system information through QR code functionality. Combined with improved Condition Monitoring software and simplified data transfer, the company states the system supports continuous operation and reduced disruption on the line.

Brand protection is enhanced through new RFID access control, which supports individual user logins and access management. Detailed access records are stored locally or transferred through multiple communication protocols, including OPC-UA and EtherNet/IP.

On the product front, the Tianjin facility will manufacture specialized hatchery feeds, with a wide range of products including MeM and MeM Prime, for customers in China and other APAC markets. The MeM range is primarily used during the late larval and nursery stages. It uses a cold micro-extrusion process and offers different particle sizes for different growth stages to accommodate feeding characteristics and nutritional requirements during the nursery stage.

ADM notes that during the hatchery and nursery stages, fish and shrimp develop rapidly, while their feed intake capacity is limited and their nutritional requirements are more specific. Different species and growth stages have varying requirements for feed particle size, palatability, nutrient supply and water stability, creating a need for more specialized product design, production processes and application support.

Beyond specialized hatchery feeds, ADM also provides specialty feeds, feed ingredients, feed additives, probiotics, premixes and related technical support for later grow-out stages. With the addition of hatchery feed capacity at the Tianjin facility, ADM’s aquaculture nutrition products and services in China now extend further into the early stages of aquaculture production, creating a more complete portfolio of products and services from hatchery and nursery through grow-out.

Ahead of World Cleanup Day on September 20, Norway is participating in the nationwide Beach Cleanup Week (Strandryddeuka), which culminates in a joint effort to remove marine litter from the Hardangerfjord – one of the world’s longest fjords – on September 17.

This year marks the fifth year of the ‘Clean Hardangerfjord’ campaign, which was launched in 2022 and is organised by Framtidshavet in collaboration with other local Norwegian organisations.

Beach Cleanup Week runs in Norway from September 11–20. Last year, 164,253 kg of marine litter was removed from Norwegian waters and surrounding areas.

According to a clean-up report from environmental organisation Hold Norge Rent, volunteers have cleared more than 5.1 million kg of litter from Norwegian beaches over the past five years.

Clean Hardangerfjord is a large-scale plastic clean-up campaign that brings together several thousand volunteers each year. The aim is to collect as much marine litter as possible in one day along the entire Hardangerfjord, which, at 180 km, is one of the world’s longest fjords.

Kenneth Bruvik, founder, board member and project coordinator at Framtidshavet, said, “Over the first four years, we have collected 80 tonnes of plastic from the Hardangerfjord. This has been possible thanks to a unique collaboration between the public sector, schools, private businesses and voluntary organisations. When we all pull together, it is incredible what we can achieve.”

Bruvik added, “An initiative of this scale not only gives us a cleaner fjord, but also brings a range of other positive effects, such as reputation and brand building, better public health, closer connections to the fjord, research and collaboration across regions. It is a model I hope more people will be inspired by, both in Norway and abroad.”

Marine litter remains a major global environmental issue. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), between 9 and 23 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year. This plastic can remain in the ocean for hundreds of years and cause harm to both animals and people.

Bruvik said, “If we do nothing, the amount of plastic ending up in the ocean could triple by 2040. As a father and grandfather, I cannot accept such a development. I want future generations to be able to experience clean oceans too. Alongside a deep love for the fjord and nature, that is my greatest motivation.”

Seafood industry support

The Norwegian seafood industry has contributed to Clean Hardangerfjord every year since its inception. Since the beginning, representatives from both fisheries and aquaculture have provided boats, equipment and volunteers for the campaign.

Bruvik said, “We are very grateful for the efforts made by the entire seafood industry. Although we still find a lot of marine litter originating from aquaculture and fisheries, today’s industry representatives have a completely different attitude from their predecessors. It is no longer acceptable for a fisher or aquaculture operator to throw waste into the sea.”

Over the years, Bruvik has seen the effects of plastic waste in the ocean, “It is frightening to see how plastic slowly becomes embedded in nature and eventually turns into microplastics. It destroys life in the ocean and is highly damaging to public health. We cannot allow that, which is why we need to put this issue on the global agenda.”

FEFAC’s latest assessment has highlighted growing risks to EU soybean meal supplies in 2026/2027, with drought, trade disruptions and EUDR sourcing constraints potentially creating a 5-million-tonne supply gap.

European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) has published its 4th update on the feed supply chain disruption risk and economic impact of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) on soy supplies for animal feed in 2027. The assessment warns that severe drought, Black Sea trade disruption and EUDR sourcing constraints are converging to squeeze the EU feed chain simultaneously.

FEFAC estimates a potential EU soybean meal (SBM) supply gap of at least around 5 million tonnes — roughly 20% of the EU’s total SBM footprint — for the 2026/2027 marketing year, with very limited substitution options available.

FEFAC projects the direct extra cost of EUDR-compliant soy for feed use at up to €1.05 billion, based on total usage of around 35 million tonnes. Because rapeseed and sunflower meal prices are pegged to SBM quotations (at roughly 65%), the increase adds a further €449 million in costs for these alternative Hi-Pro proteins — bringing the total estimated impact to around €1.40 billion for SBM, RSM and SFM supplies to the EU feed and livestock sector.

Based on market information, FEFAC assesses that this could translate into a direct cost impact of roughly +€40 per tonne of pig meat and +€15 per tonne of poultry meat, further undermining the competitiveness of the EU’s livestock sector.

FEFAC President Nicolas Coudry-Mesny commented: “There is profound concern already about the EU’s feed material sourcing capacity due to the combined effects of persisting drought and closure of key maritime corridors, such as the Black Sea, leading to a market crunch by the end of the calendar year. The imminent application of the EUDR, which is currently disrupting EU purchases of soy from global markets after 30 December 2026, exacerbates the pressure, potentially leading to major disruption of essential feed supply chains.”

FEFAC’s updated origin-by-origin risk assessment classifies North America, Argentina and Paraguay as low risk, with 90–100% expected SBM availability; EU origins, Ukraine and Serbia as low-to-medium risk, mainly on logistics concerns; Brazil as medium risk (an improvement, though with continued regional variation between Southern Brazil and the Cerrado/Northern export corridor); and West Africa, India and China as high risk, particularly for non-GM and organic soy niche markets.

A key open question is whether Brazil can shift part of its EU-bound SBM supply from the Northern to the Southern corridor to close this gap; however, FEFAC notes persistent bottlenecks related to storage capacity which may constrain this flexibility.

FEFAC urges EU institutions to take exceptional measures to ensure feed security and prevent an economically unviable situation for the EU livestock sector in early 2027, by ensuring immediate simplified implementation of the EUDR for in-scope soy products as well as suspending the EUDR application to palm kernel expeller.

FEFAC also urges EU institutions and national authorities to use existing and future EU trade agreements (e.g. MERCOSUR, CETA, DCFTA Ukraine, and EU-US agreement) to confirm long-standing zero-tariff schedules for soybean meal imports and to facilitate bilateral recognition of EUDR legality certification programmes.

An initiative led by Axfoundation and SLU has tested mycoprotein produced by RISE in pig feed. Lantmännen produced the soy-free feed, while the trial assessed digestibility, nutritional quality and pork characteristics.

Swedish-produced mycoprotein has been used in pig production for the first time. Made from side streams from the forestry industry, it was included in a soy-free feed developed and tested through collaboration across the value chain. According to Axfoundation, results show good digestibility, nutritional quality and meat quality, demonstrating the potential to replace soy in feed. The initiative is part of The Feed of the Future for Fish, Pigs, Poultry and Laying Hens, led by Axfoundation and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

“We have demonstrated that imported soy can be replaced with Swedish protein ingredients produced from existing side streams. These ingredients require significantly less land, improve resource efficiency and can contribute to a more resilient domestic feed supply,” says Madeleine Linins Mörner, Program Director of Future Food at Axfoundation.

The organization notes that around half of the world’s agricultural land is used to produce animal feed. Swedish pig production already uses relatively little soy per kilogram of meat compared with the EU and global averages. Even so, Swedish pig production consumes around 39,000 metric tons of soy each year. That corresponds to soybean cultivation outside Sweden covering an area of roughly 10 by 10 kilometers. While soy used in Swedish feed is almost always sustainability-certified, it is still often grown in large-scale monocultures that rely on significant chemical inputs and occupy extensive areas of agricultural land.

At the same time, large volumes of side streams from Swedish forests, oceans and the food industry remain underutilized. Through The Feed of the Future for Fish, Pigs, Poultry and Laying Hens, researchers, farmers, feed manufacturers and food companies are working together to develop innovative circular protein ingredients, including mycoprotein, insect meal and cultivated mussels. These ingredients reportedly require only a fraction of the land and inputs needed for soy production.

The feeding trial involving 18 pigs at Tå Gård was conducted using Future Feed for Pigs. The soy-free feed used in the pig trial was produced by Lantmännen, Sweden’s largest farmer-owned agricultural cooperative, and included Swedish-produced mycoprotein from RISE in Örnsköldsvik made through wet fermentation of side streams from the Swedish forestry industry. The project has also evaluated the nutritional quality and digestibility of Cirkulär’s wet-fermented mycoprotein and Dapibuset’s dry-fermented mycoprotein.

“Our analysis shows that both the wet- and dry-fermented mycoproteins provide good protein digestibility and nutritional quality. The results demonstrate that these circular protein ingredients can perform well even in high performing pigs, animals with high requirements for feed quality and palatability,” says Emma Ivarsson, Researcher at the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare at SLU.

Sensory evaluations conducted by specialists from the School of Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Meal Science at Örebro University found that pork from pigs fed the innovative feed matched the reference products in quality, and both the pork neck and pork chop were described as having a more pronounced nutty flavor. The meat, supplied by Kötthallen Sorunda, will be served for a limited period at Gothia Towers in Gothenburg from September 21.

“The pork delivered excellent flavor and product quality. We see growing interest in foods that combine great quality with a lower environmental footprint,” says Mattias Dernelid, Product Manager at Smakriket, Kötthallen Sorunda.

The European Union’s soybean production is forecast at 2.5–2.6 million tonnes in 2026, approximately 10–15 percent below the 2025 level, according to Donau Soja’s August Market Report.

Persistent heat and moisture deficits have reduced yield prospects across parts of central and western Europe, the report states. Croatia, Romania and Poland are currently expected to achieve yields close to their respective five-year averages, according to the organisation.

The weaker and more uneven crop outlook comes as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) approaches its main application date. From 30 December 2026, the Regulation will apply to large and medium-sized operators and traders, while micro and small operators will be covered from 30 June 2027. The regulation concerns soya, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, cattle, wood and rubber, as well as certain products derived from these commodities.

Businesses in scope must demonstrate that relevant products placed on the EU market or exported from the EU are deforestation-free, comply with relevant legislation in the country of production, and are covered by the required due diligence process, as reported by Donau Soja.

According to the organisation, lower production is expected to make regional supply tighter and more uneven in 2026/27. Changes in harvest volumes, logistics or sourcing patterns may lead companies to work with different suppliers, origins or delivery routes, making reliable supply-chain information more important. Donau Soja notes that market information can help companies anticipate changes in supply but does not replace EUDR due diligence.

“The EUDR is not only a legal requirement. It is also a supply-chain data challenge,” said Jovana Dijsalov, Head of External Relations at the organisation. “When sourcing patterns change, companies need to know which information they have, where gaps remain and who is responsible for closing them. Starting this work early gives companies time to work with their supply-chain partners and strengthen the quality of their due diligence data.”

Three specific goals for nature

1. Reduce pressure on wild fish stocks

Musholm aims to reduce its use of marine raw materials derived from blue whiting by 52.94 percent by 2029, using 2025 as the baseline year. By 2031, Musholm will also reduce its dependence on marine raw materials from wild-caught fish through increased use of circular and alternative raw materials. The goal is supported by BioMar Blue IMPACT feed.

2. Restore marine habitats

A total of 42 hectares of rock reefs and 14 hectares of blue mussel reefs are to be restored by the end of 2029 at Storebælt Klint in Musholm Bay, as part of a project in collaboration with the Municipality of Slagelse. At the same time, Musholm will reduce the use of net impregnation at its three aquaculture farms by 2030 at the latest.

3. Reduce the risk of impact on endangered and protected species

By 2029 at the latest, Musholm and BioMar will strengthen traceability, monitoring and mitigation efforts in selected fisheries supplying marine raw materials for aquaculture feed. These efforts are intended to improve understanding of biodiversity-related risks and their management throughout the supply chain.

USDA lowers corn stocks while soybean demand accelerates

A major new bulk storage and handling facility has opened at Berth 43 at the Port of Tilbury, UK, for Forth Ports customer Cefetra, one of the country’s major traders of grains and animal feed raw materials.

The purpose-built facility, with a floor space of approximately 14,000 square metres – equivalent to two full-sized football pitches – will be used for the storage and handling of imported animal feed products, including soybean meal, with capacity of up to 65,000 tonnes, according to Forth Ports. The facility has been designed around direct vessel discharge operations, improving efficiency and reducing cargo handling movements.

According to the company, the project represents a significant investment in modern port infrastructure, strengthening the port’s position as a leading UK gateway for agricultural commodities and bulk cargoes. The facility supports UK agricultural supply chains through the efficient import, storage and distribution of animal feed products.

Stuart Wallace, Chief Executive at Forth Ports, said: “This new bulk storage and handling facility in Tilbury demonstrates our commitment to further investment across our port infrastructure across the UK and confirms the strong, long-lasting relationship we have with Cefetra.”

The North American Renderers Association (NARA) has announced Ava Goodpasture as the inaugural recipient of the Owen Vickers Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship was established earlier this year in memory of longtime rendering industry leader T Owen Vickers, Sr, a third-generation leader of Birmingham Hide & Tallow Co (BHT ReSources). It supports students pursuing higher education while honouring Vickers’ commitment to the industry and to investing in future generations, the association stated. The recipient receives US$2500 per year for two years, for a total award of US$5000.

“Owen believed the rendering industry’s future depends on the people who come after us,” said Michael Glenn, Chief Executive Officer and President of BHT ReSources. “Establishing this scholarship in his name is a fitting tribute to a man who spent his life building a family business, strengthening our industry and quietly investing in the next generation. The agriculture department of the state of Ohio, USA, has suspended the grain handler’s license of United Equity, Inc, following a department audit that confirmed a financial shortfall, according to the state agency.

The suspension affects United Equity’s main location at 104 S Main St in Delphos, Ohio, as well as branch locations in Spencerville and Celina. According to the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), the license was suspended to prevent more outstanding obligations from being incurred and to facilitate a possible remedy via the Grain Indemnity Fund.

United Equity, Inc is a locally owned farm-based cooperative serving Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, Putnam and Van Wert counties. The co-op provides grain, feed and agronomy services, including livestock feed, fertiliser application and seed treatment.

Farmers who believe they have outstanding grain obligations with the co-op are advised to contact the ODA at 614-728-6410.

The Grain Indemnity Fund was created in 1983 to reimburse farmers when a licensed handler becomes insolvent. Claims are handled through ODA’s Grain Feed & Seed Section in conjunction with the Ohio Commodity Advisory Commission.

According to the ODA, Ohio Revised Code gives priority to the automatic lien held by the department for the benefit of farmers in the event of a grain handler’s failure or insolvency. The department’s liens will now have priority over all competing lien claims, ensuring the indemnity fund receives maximum reimbursement in the asset liquidation process.

Planning 80-million-bushel annual capacity for Wisconsin facility

BoMill has launched BoMill InSight HiFlex, a scalable grain-sorting solution designed for the large-scale grain terminal and high-volume grain handling segment, according to the company.

Built on BoMill’s patented NIR grain-sorting technology, HiFlex is configured to meet specific capacity and installation requirements. The first version is a turnkey solution with a sorting capacity of 200 metric tonnes per hour, integrated into a 40-foot container for simple integration, commissioning and relocation between sites, as reported by the company.

The modular design of BoMill InSight also allows the solution to be scaled to higher capacities or configured as a permanent installation integrated into an industrial process. The solution is commercially available, with several potential customer projects currently under evaluation.

According to BoMill, the development of HiFlex resulted from continuous dialogue with existing and potential customers. The company identified a clear need for high-capacity precision sorting in large-scale operations, combined with flexibility to adapt to different operational requirements.

The solution allows grain to be separated by protein content before it is sold or processed. For grain suppliers, the company states that HiFlex helps optimise batches to required specifications, avoiding excess protein not reflected in the selling price and reducing the risk of levels below specification that may result in price discounts. For grain buyers, more consistent protein levels enable better use of incoming grain and opportunities for cost savings.

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has appointed Jennie Cameron as director of membership and engagement, effective September 2026, according to the association.

In this role, Cameron will lead efforts to grow and retain AFIA’s membership, strengthen member relationships and enhance the overall member experience, the association stated. She brings nearly two decades of experience in the animal health and animal food industries, as well as firsthand experience as an active AFIA member.

“We are excited to welcome Jennie to the AFIA team,” said Megan Provost, the association’s Chief Operating Officer. “Jennie brings a valuable combination of industry experience and a genuine understanding of what our members need from their association. Having experienced AFIA firsthand as an engaged member and committee leader, she understands the importance of building strong relationships, listening to our members and continually finding new ways to deliver value.”

Cameron joins the association from Phibro Animal Health Corporation, where she spent nearly two decades in business development, product management and strategic customer relationships, most recently as a senior account manager, as reported by the AFIA. During that time, she served on the Purchasing and Ingredient Supplier Committee for nine years, including as chair and co-chair.

Cameron succeeds Meghan Dicks, who transitioned to director of regulatory affairs following the retirement of Louise Calderwood in August. Cameron holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Quincy University.

Anton Paar has introduced the Brabender GlutoPeak, a benchtop analyser designed to provide rapid gluten quality control at goods receipt, according to the company.

The system, which uses only 2.5g to 12g of flour or vital gluten suspended in water, stirs the sample at up to 3500 min⁻¹ and records a torque-time curve that captures gluten build-up, maximum strength and breakdown over time, as reported by Anton Paar. Within one to three minutes, it shows whether an incoming lot behaves as required, so qualified flour can go straight to the appropriate silo and critical batches are stopped before they reach production.

“With the GlutoPeak, quality control moves right to goods receipt,” said Dr Banu Sezer, Project Manager for the product. “Instead of waiting for downstream tests or trial bakes, users see within minutes whether a flour lot is fit for purpose – and can route or reject it before it disrupts production.”

According to the company, the integrated MetaBridge software automatically calculates peak time, peak torque and torque 15 seconds before and after the peak, translating aggregation speed, network strength and stability into numerical criteria that correlate with dough-processing and baking performance. Users can define quality reference curves and automatically flag deviations.

The system features simple two-step handling that eliminates the need for sieving or sample transfers, according to Anton Paar. An integrated method database contains pre-validated, application-specific parameters for standard flour, vital gluten and low-protein flour, supporting up to 10 tests per hour. MetaBridge allows access to measurements and evaluations from any PC, phone or tablet, with results transferable to LIMS or third-party systems.

According to the company, the analyser is designed to enable mills, bakeries and pasta producers to control flour and gluten quality, stabilise recipes and deliver consistent end products as raw-material variability increases under changing fertiliser regulations.

No employees injured at facility following Russian strike

Brazil’s animal feed composition is undergoing a structural shift, with distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and sorghum gaining share as the country’s biofuels industry expands, according to a new RaboResearch report titled ‘Brazil: The feed and protein powerhouse strengthens its competitive edge.’

Although corn and soybean meal remain the backbone of feed rations, corn’s share in feed formulations has declined since 2017, indicating the beginning of a diversification process and partial substitution with industrial byproducts, the report states. Soybean meal, in contrast, has maintained remarkable stability throughout the period, reinforcing its role as the primary protein source in feed.

DDGS has shown the most notable growth, with supply increasing at an average annual rate of 21 percent over the past five years, according to RaboResearch. The report projects the grain byproduct supply will reach eight million metric tonnes by 2031, driven by the continued expansion of Brazil’s corn ethanol industry.

Sorghum has also emerged as a relevant alternative, particularly in regions where rainfall patterns constrain second-crop corn planting. The country’s production of the grain reached six million metric tonnes in the 2025/26 season and is projected to increase to 10 million metric tons by 2031, outpacing growth observed for soybeans and corn, as reported by RaboResearch.

The report attributes these shifts to the expansion of biofuels, supported by Brazil’s Fuel of the Future law, which stipulates a 20 percent mandatory biodiesel blend in diesel by 2030. While the primary incentive is linked to soybean oil, the net effect will be an increase in overall crushing activity, raising soybean meal production by around five million metric tonnes compared to 2025 volumes.

According to RaboResearch, the projected supply growth appears sufficient to meet rising demand, highlighting one of the South American nation’s most important structural advantages: abundant and diversified access to feed inputs. The analysis indicates that feed ingredient availability should remain well ahead of industry requirements, reducing the risk of supply bottlenecks.

The report notes that feed represents the single largest cost component in animal protein production, accounting for 70 percent to 80 percent of operating costs in beef cattle feedlots and approximately 72 percent of hog production costs in Santa Catarina. Lower feed costs directly improve production margins and strengthen the international competitiveness of Brazil’s animal protein sector, according to RaboResearch.

The country’s share of global exports exceeds its share of global production across beef, chicken and pork, the report states. In beef, Brazil accounts for approximately 15 percent of world production but holds a significantly larger share of global trade. The report suggests that rising global protein demand, combined with the nation’s structural cost advantages, makes it unlikely that demand will become a binding constraint on further sector expansion.

Alapala International Inc has successfully completed and commissioned a turnkey feed mill for Agro Universal in Georgia, delivering a modern production facility with a capacity of five tonnes per hour, according to the company.

The plant is fully operational and designed to produce both mash and pelleted feed, providing a reliable and efficient solution for commercial feed production, Alapala stated.

Founded in 2017, Agro Universal operates as the authorised representative of a Hungarian company and is active in feed manufacturing and international exports. According to Alapala, the new facility enables the company to produce a wide range of feed products for poultry, swine, dairy cattle and small ruminants while meeting European quality and hygiene standards.

Executed on a full turnkey basis, the project included process engineering, plant engineering, equipment manufacturing and supply, mechanical installation, electrical works, automation integration, commissioning, performance optimisation and operator training, the company reported. The entire production process from raw material intake to final packing is controlled through an advanced PLC-based automation system, ensuring high operational reliability, full traceability and consistent product quality.

The completion of this project marks another milestone in Alapala Feed Tech’s expanding international portfolio. According to the company, it continues to strengthen its position as a global partner for turnkey feed milling projects while supporting customers in improving productivity, operational efficiency and long-term competitiveness.

FEFAC, the European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation, has published the sixth edition of its Feed Sustainability Charter 2030 Progress Report, which takes stock of the European industry’s progress against the Charter’s five ambitions: climate neutrality, responsible sourcing, animal health and welfare, resource efficiency and socio-economic resilience.

The FEFAC sustainability report comes as a new Presidency takes office and the European Commission adopts its EU Protein Plan and EU Livestock Strategy, according to the federation. The organisation welcomed the package as a timely response to the strategic vulnerabilities facing Europe’s feed and food chains, including the Protein Plan’s target of raising the share of EU-grown oilseeds and protein crops in domestic feed to 35 percent by 2035, up from around a quarter today.

For FEFAC, strategic dependency extends beyond protein crops to essential additives such as vitamins and amino acids, where Europe still relies heavily on a handful of non-EU suppliers, the report states.

The Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC), in partnership with rePurpose Global, announced the return of Plastic Recovery July, an industry-wide initiative helping pet companies fund verified plastic recovery projects around the world.

The campaign brings together pet brands, manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and retailers to support the recovery of plastic waste that would otherwise pollute communities, waterways, and ecosystems.

The initiative follows a successful inaugural campaign in 2025, when 14 companies across the pet industry collectively funded the recovery of more than 92,000 pounds of plastic waste through impact projects in Kenya, India, and Indonesia.

Those efforts also supported more than 1,070 waste workers through recovery and recycling programs while helping protect coral reefs, mangrove forests, and sensitive ecosystems in the Himalayan foothills. More than 800 women were supported through workforce and leadership opportunities connected to local recovery systems.

“The first year of Plastic Recovery July showed what becomes possible when companies across the pet industry align around shared action,” said the Pet Sustainability Coalition. “Collective investment creates measurable impact at a scale individual companies cannot achieve alone.”

This year’s campaign will continue supporting verified recovery efforts through rePurpose Global’s Verified Plastic Recovery (VPR) framework, which tracks and verifies recovered plastic through ethical collection and end-of-life processing systems. Funds raised through Plastic Recovery July will support one of rePurpose Global’s 13 active impact projects spanning 6 countries across South Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa — from protecting whale breeding grounds on Colombia’s Pacific coast to safeguarding coral ecosystems in Bali to empowering women-led waste collection networks in India. Each project operates through rePurpose’s VPR framework, ensuring every pound recovered is tracked, verified, and tied to dignified livelihoods for waste workers on the ground. Specific project allocation will be shared following the campaign.

Plastic Recovery July was designed to offer companies a practical action they can take today while broader packaging transitions continue to evolve across the industry.

Summer is probably the best time of year for dogs and their owners. But between beach chairs and mountain panoramas, there are a number of pitfalls lurking that can overwhelm a dog’s stomach and lead to acute diarrhoea. ida+, which specialises in high-quality dietary supplements for dogs, provides an overview of the typical triggers and explains what to do if your dog does happen to fall ill.

1. From lakes to puddles: these water sources are a cause for concern in summer

Dogs drink a lot in summer, and by no means always from their clean bowl at home. When out and about, there are several risks lurking that every dog owner should be aware of.

• Swimming lakes:Beware of stagnant water. During prolonged heatwaves, toxic blue-green algae multiply rapidly. Even a small sip is enough to cause poisoning, vomiting and acute diarrhoea. Therefore, look out for warning signs on the shore or greenish-blue streaks on the water’s surface.
• Puddles: What looks like a harmless source of water is often a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites in warm weather. Water bowls left in the sun for hours are also risky. So change the water several times a day and carry your own water bottle with you.
• The sea: When your dog is romping through the waves or enthusiastically fetching their favourite ball, they often swallow a surprising amount of salt water. The salt dehydrates the body and can quickly lead to sudden diarrhoea. You should therefore offer your four-legged friend fresh drinking water regularly and take breaks in the shade.

2. Found & Spoilt: The food traps they sniff out

• Spoilt food: Wet food spoils surprisingly quickly in a bowl at summer temperatures. Within a few hours, bacteria multiply rapidly and flies may lay their eggs in it. You should therefore offer food in smaller portions, store opened tins in the fridge and dispose of any uneaten leftovers after an hour at the latest.
• Food scraps on the beach and at barbecue areas: On holiday, your dog is exploring new and exciting surroundings, but it’s worth keeping a close eye on any scraps they sniff out on the ground. Discarded barbecue scraps, greasy bones or dried-out fish remains on the beach or at the campsite are anything but wholesome. Such ‘finds’ are not only hard to digest but may also contain pathogens.
• Ice-cold water or ice cream: however well-intentioned the quick cool-down may be, ice-cold water straight from the fridge or a lick of an ice cream sundae can severely irritate a dog’s stomach. This often results in acute diarrhoea. It is therefore better to offer water that is lukewarm to cool and to avoid ice cream intended for humans. If you want to treat your dog to something refreshing, you can opt for special dog-friendly ice cream recipes made with yoghurt or broth.

3. A change of scenery with side effects: travel & new stimuli

Many dogs are creatures of habit. What for us is a long-awaited holiday initially means excitement for our four-legged friends – and sometimes pure stress, which can upset their stomachs.

• Travel stress & change of scenery: Long car journeys, flights or unfamiliar pet carriers often unsettle dogs. The combination of excitement, lack of exercise and confined spaces frequently leads to the dog developing diarrhoea upon arrival at their destination. Add to this unfamiliar noises, smells and a change in daily routine, and the strain on your four-legged friend is greater than many owners realise. Regular breaks along the way and familiar items such as their favourite blanket or toy help your dog to travel more relaxed and settle in more quickly.
• Climate and dietary changes: Extremely high temperatures at the holiday destination further weaken the immune system. If this is compounded by a change in diet – for example, because the dog’s usual brand is not available at the holiday destination – diarrhoea is often inevitable. It is therefore best to take a sufficient supply of the dog’s usual food with you, or to gradually switch to a brand that is also available whilst travelling, starting a few weeks before departure.

The current situation is still not as optimal as it was estimated. Above all, the health of exhibitors and visitors and the successful outcome of the event are most important to the organizers.

In light of the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, which has forced the Royal Thai Government to implement new strict measures to control the spread of the pandemic, and the delays of the vaccination programs in several Asian countries, VICTAM and VIV do not see the opportunity to realize a large-scale event on the short term. Looking at the ongoing travel restrictions from and to Asia, the organizers also believe that it is not possible to guarantee the event quality as we know them for. The postponement to the third quarter of 2022 is in the interest of the whole industry.

VICTAM Asia in co-location with Health & Nutrition Asia are thus rescheduled to September 7-9, 2022. The new venue selected is IMPACT Halls 9-10, in Bangkok, Thailand. The objective remains the same: to realize the Total Animal Feed and Health event.

The dates secured in September 2022 will give all stakeholders room to breathe and pay attention to other vital issues. The organizers’ mission is to present a strong, value-adding event to the industry with high benefits for all parties.

VICTAM Corporation and VIV worldwide will also continue their partnership in Europe in 2022 by co-locating VICTAM International and VIV Europe at the Jaarbeurs venue in Utrecht, the Netherlands, from May 31 – June 2, 2022. The 2^nd International Feed Technology Congress (IFTC 2022), organized by Wageningen University and the VICTAM Foundation will be held from 31 May/1 June 2022 during the VICTAM International 2022 in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

            After the successful 1^st edition, brought together 120 researchers from 26 different countries of all continents in Cologne, Germany, the 2^nd edition again will focus on bringing together researchers from universities, research institutions and industry to discuss the latest developments in feed technology. During the 1^st IFTC, valorization of raw materials by technology, current process developments and outcomes of feed technology with respect to feed formulation were major topics. A special Workshop was organized to discuss current and future issues of importance in feed manufacturing technology. Contributions and the results of the Workshop were recently published as a special issue of the ‘Animal Feed Science & Technology’ journal. The successful format of the 1^st IFTC will guarantee high quality presentations by world-renowned experts, open discussions, and publication of the latest scientific and practical developments in feed technology during the 2^nd IFTC.

The 2^nd IFT Congress will be held in Utrecht, the Netherlands during the VICTAM International Exhibition in 2022. The EU-28 (Greece, Malta and Luxembourg excluded) figures show that poultry feed production grew by 2%, whereas pig feed fell by 1% and cattle feed remained stable. On the pig feed side, after 2 years of moderate growth, the production decreased by 1% in 2016. This can partly be explained by the effects of African Swine Fever in Eastern Europe, which weighed heavily on the development of pork production, but also by low market prices for pork the first half of 2016 and large availability of feed grade cereals at low prices which benefitted on-farm mixing.

The EU depends for 75% of its needs for protein-rich ingredients for feeding purpose on the global world markets. Some of these GM products, maize, soy and rapeseed are already commercialized abroad, others will be harvested and made available in the key exporting regions to the EU as from autumn 2014. Further delays in the EU authorization process may, therefore, lead to significant shortage and trade disruptions due to unavoidable presence of these GM events in our supplies of both GM and non-GM material. This would trigger uncertainty on import flows, supply chain disruptions and price hikes for basic food products and major feed ingredients as well as undermine the competitiveness of the EU food, feed and livestock sectors, if a decision is not taken in July 2014.

The 8 GM products have been deemed safe by the European Food Safety Authority (ESFA) and have reached the final stage of the risk management process. The decisions for the related EU import authorizations lay in the hands of the EU Commission: some of them are awaited since the end of 2013.

Thai Union Feedmill is also studying the use of enzymes in fish and shrimp feeds to increase nutrient digestion and maximize nutrient utilization of fish and shrimp.

Application of enzymes also enables the company to reduce the use of fish meal in aqua feeds in order to respond to customer’s concerns over sustainability of natural resources.

“The extrusion technology is more suitable in making both fish and shrimp feed as it treats the feed with high temperature and in a short time. We apply enzymes in the feed through a coating process, and this way the enzyme efficacy remains intact,” said Bunluesak Sorajjakit, managing director of Thai Union Feedmill.

Thai Union Feedmill installed an extruder from Wenger of the US at its feed mill in Samutsakhon province, about 90km west of Bangkok, late last year.

Supplies of extruders and other milling equipment from across the world will showcase their latest technology at VICTAM Asia and FIAAP Asia 2014 at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Bangkok (BITEC), Thailand during 8-10 April 2014.

The two events are Asia’s biggest and most important exhibitions dedicated to the region’s feed industry.

“This is a historic bulk delivery of US soybeans to Vietnam,” he said, adding there are three more bookings for US soybeans fully loaded in handymax vessels by importers in Vietnam later in the year.

Handymax is a type of cargoship for transporting goods in bulk such as grains with its capacity ranging from 40,000-50,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage).

The crushers in Vietnam process soybeans into soybean oil. A co-product from the processing is soybean meal, which is sold to feed milllers across the country. 

Soybean meal is the main source of amino acids, which are building blocks of proteins in animals. That is why it is one of the most important ingredients in animal feed.   

Soybean meal from different origins contains a varying level of nutrient contents, particularly in amino acids and energy.   

To provide the latest studies on soybeans in animal nutrition, the US Soybean Export Council will take part in the FIAAP Conference 2014 held alongside FIAAP Asia 2014 at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (Bitec) in Bangkok, Thailand on 9 April 2014.

The conference will also address various issues related to efficient use of novel feed additives for boosting health and growth of animals.

FIAAP Asia 2014 is an international event focused on feed ingredients and additives. It will take place at Bitec from 8-10 April 2014 together with VICTAM Asia 2014 and GRAPAS Asia 2014.

VICTAM is an exhibition dedicated to feed production technology, while GRAPAS focuses on grain and rice processing.

To shed light on this opportunity, Bioenergy International Magazine will organise a one-day conference titled ‘Pellets & Biomass Update Asia’ during Victam Asia 2014, an exhibition on feed and biomass technology that will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 8-10 April 2014.

The conference will look at how husks, shells, nuts, EFB’s (Empty Fruit Bunch), fines, dust or other residues from feed and food industries can provide internal energy cost reductions, waste management solutions or become valuable revenue streams.

The conference aims to describe the potentials, explore the opportunities and provide, for the region and the sector, relevant examples and case studies.

Victam Asia 2014 will be held alongside GRAPAS Asia 2014 (grain and rice processing) and FIAAP Asia 2014 (feed ingredients).

However, it is somewhat problematic in applying the right dose of enzymes due to their non-linear effects. Adding an enzyme at a wrong dose or at a higher level than those recommended by the manufacturer could lead to uneconomical results.

To fix this, Adifo, provider of software solutions for the feed industry from Belgium, has developed an enzyme module that defines the non-linear effects separate from the ingredient matrix, which is provided by the enzyme manufacturer as a reference for the user.

"The enzyme module that we develop is very unique. It sets up all the effects of the enzyme outside the feed formulation and the ingredient matrix," said Hans van der Wal, Adifo's Market Development Manager.

"This means that you just define in the system what the effect of the enzyme will be for a certain animal group, a certain nutrient and a certain ingredient. So, you can see right away what effect the enzyme has on energy, protein and other nutrients," he explained. 

Based on these unique features, the enzyme module of Bestmix accurately calculates the optimal inclusion rate of the enzyme.

Adifo will showcase its solutions for feed formulation at Victam Asia 2014, which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 8-10 April 2014.

Driving the demand is the power sector. The report said since 2012 the South Korean government has imposed power companies with a generating capacity of 500MW or more to use renewable energy by 10% within 2022. 

To meet this target, a number of power producers in South Korea are turning to import biomass pellets as they are the most economical solution.

The sector used 55,000 tonnes of pellets in 2012, and their use is expected to jump to 400,000 tonnes in 2013, the report said.

Russia was the biggest supplier of pellets to South Korea in 2012, supplying 34.1% of its total import, followed by Malaysia 25.1%, Vietnam 24.7% and Indonesia 7.3%.

With its abundance in agricultural by-products such as rice husks, corn stalks and cobs, straw and more, Vietnam has a great opportunity to produce pellet fuels serving the energy sector in South Korea and worldwide.

To get an update on the biomass pellet business in Asia, the Bioenergy International will organize a conference on “Pellets & Biomass Update Asia” on 10 April 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand.

It will take place at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre or Bitec. The conference is a part of VICTAM Asia 2014, FIAAP Asia 2014 and GRAPAS Asia 2014.

Besides, he said, the expander technology also offers other advantages such as improving feed hygiene due to its high temperature, short-time treatment.

Currently, Trang Wattana Farm produces about 1500 tonnes/month of pellet feeds for use in its farm that rears 2500 sows and produces 4500 commercial pigs.

On average, the pigs (18-100kg) achieve an average daily gain (ADG) of 780g/day and FCR 2.4-2.5.

Mr Rawat targets to increase the ADG of the commercial pigs to over 800g/day and lower the FCR to below 2.4. And he hopes that the expander feed could enable him to achieve this target.

He will visit FIAAP and Victam Asia 2014, which will be held during 8-10 April 2014 at Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) in Bangkok, Thailand, in search of the expansion technology and learn more about its benefits from suppliers, his fellow pig farmers and feed millers who gain experiences in this technology.

Issued by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in November 2013, the report said Indonesia produced sufficient corn for making feed. However, feed millers preferred to procure corn from abroad because of its superior quality.

“Poor post-harvest handling, inconsistency in quality and high moisture content make local corn unfavourable for feed millers,” the report said, citing the Indonesian Feed Millers Association.

USDA forecasts that corn demand for feed in Indonesia would increase 6.4% to 6.6 million tonnes in 2013/2014 crop year, which started in November 2013.

The country’s corn imports in the year would increase by 12% to 1.9 million tonnes. Over 70% of Indonesia’s corn imports come from India, followed by Argentina, Brazil and the US.

To optimise the use of locally produced corn in Indonesia, feed millers and traders need to join forces with farmers to improve post-harvest handling, storage and preservation.

As the key ingredient in poultry feed, improving quality of local corn would significantly decrease the cost of poultry production, and make chicken and eggs more available at a more affordable price. 

Indonesian feed millers, corn growers and traders can update the latest technology and knowhow in post-harvest handling, storage and preservation at Victam Asia, FIAAP Asia and Grapas Asia 2014.

"The competition in the south is very tough, but we're confident that we'll be able to penetrate into this market. We target to set up the new plant in Dong Nai because we've been selling a big volume of piglet feeds in the province and the farmers are very happy with the quality of our products," said Dao Manh Luong, Austfeed's CEO.

Austfeed started shipping its feeds for sales in Dong Nai and other southern provinces since the end of 2012. The feeds are shipped from its feed mill in the central province of Binh Dinh and stored at its warehouse in the province before distribution to the customers.

"It will be a big project in Dong Nai because we see a big potential in the southern market. We plan to build a large-scale feedmill and invest in the latest technology for the operations there," he said.

Austfeed started moving south since 2011 when it built a feed mill in the central province of Binh Dinh. 

Although livestock production in the central was not so well developed at that time, it saw a potential to grow the market there.

"Our feed sales in the central were very slow in the past, but they're increasing to the level that we have decided to build a feedmill there. The living standard of people there is getting better and meat consumption is increasing, boosting the demand for livestock feed," said Mr Luong.

Initially, the plant in Binh Dinh had a capacity of 50,000 tonnes/year, but its capacity had been fully utilised after a year of the operations.

This has led the company to install the second production line capacity 100,000 tonnes/year in 2012 with all the equipment supplied by Buhler of Switzerland.

"We made the right decision to expand in the central because livestock production in the region is growing up quickly. Many pig and chicken farms in the south are moving to the central as they can't find land to expand their operations due to rapid urbanisation in the south," he said.

To find out technology for expansion of his feed business, Mr Luong will visit FIAAP & VICTAM Asia 2014. The event will take place at the Bangkok Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) in Bangkok,Thailand during 8-10 April 2014.

It is Asia's largest trade exhibition for the feed industry. Suppliers of milling technology and related equipment for feed manufacturing from over the world, along with international suppliers of feed additives and ingredients will participate to showcase their latest innovations at the event.

The plant, which also produces aquaculture feeds, has been operating at its full capacity of 8800 tonnes a month.

"It's time for us to build a feed mill dedicated to petfood production as we're seeing our petfood sales growing leaps and bounds. We have set aside USD 50 million for building the plant that will be equipped with the latest production technology," said Mr Narongchai.

The new petfood plant of Betagro will be located on its production complex in Lopburi and its construction will begin in late 2013.

Betagro has set up a team to study the petfood market in Thailand in order to develop the products that fit the need of the customers in the future. The team was also sent to learn about petfood technology in Europe.

Mr Narongchai said Betagro sold about 3000 tonnes of petfood/month. This accounts as about 12% share of the petfood market in Thailand. 

Thailand will rank the eighth fastest-growing market for pet care, which also includes petfood, in the world between 2013 and 2018, projects Euromonitor International, a market research firm.

It said pet care sales in Thailand will grow by about USD 300 million in the period, driven by rising incomes and levels of pet ownership. Increasing number of pets in emerging markets such as China, Thailand and India are switching to commercial petfood. 

In 2013, petfood accounts for 77% of the global pet care sales of USD 96 billion, said Euromonitor.

The rise in feed demand is motivating feed millers in Indonesia to build more feed plants in 2013 and beyond.

Charoen Pokphand Indonesia, a subsidiary of Thailand agri-food conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc, is due to open its new feed mill in West Java, said Ong Mei Sian, directof of CP Indonesia.

Costing USD 30-40 million, the plant will have a capacity of 20,000 tonnes/month production of poultry feeds.

The company will build two more feed mills in Bali and Pandang in 2014 with an investment of USD 20 million for each plant.

CP Indonesia currently operates seven feed mills in Indonesia with a combined capacity of about four million tonnes.

In June 2013, InVivo Indonesia, a subsidiary of InVivo Group from France, opened its fifth feed mill in West Java, said managing director Felix Segalen.

Costing USD 15 million, the plant has a capacity of 150,000 tonnes/year and its capacity can be doubled in the future.

It has two production lines, one for livestock and the other for fish feeds. Stolz, French milling equipment manufacturer, supplied its latest technology for the plant, which is one of the most modern feed mills in Indonesia.

Reaching the top
Following an intense ten-month period of training, Ernst Nef presented the graduates of this year’s course their Diplomas in the Hotel Uzwil, qualifying them as Feed Production Engineers or confirming their attendance of the course. In his entertaining address, Ernst Nef emphasized the high significance of training and continuing education. He expressed his admiration for the students’ decision to go back to school: “By making this far-reaching decision, you took up a challenge that you have now successfully met. Today, you have reached the top. With the knowledge you have acquired and your great commitment, you now have the right instruments available to satisfy the rigorous requirements of safe and economical animal feed production.” He said that the goal was on the one hand to meet consumers’ needs for hygienic feeds that are safe for humans and animals alike. On the other hand, he said that companies were increasingly facing the challenge of producing and marketing feeds more efficiently and especially more responsibly while meeting legal regulations and directives.

A Russian as the best in class
Ernst Nef personally handed each graduate their diploma, adding some amusing personal anecdote to his congratulations. It has become a tradition for the SFT to distinguish the student with the highest grade during each diploma-awarding ceremony. This year the award in the form of a commemorative plaque went to the Russian Grigory Khoroshchenko, who attended the course in German – a foreign language for him. Grigory Khoroshchenko works as an Area Manager Feed & Biomass in the Bühler branch office in Moscow. Peter Hofer, Vice President of the School Board of the SFT, congratulated the best in class for his outstanding average grade of 5.54 (out of 6) and handed him the traditional pewter plaque.

New concept
The Diploma Course on Feed Manufacturing Technology was held for the second time on the basis of a new concept. The course starts in the spring with a 15-week preparatory correspondence course. This is followed by a four-week intensive course in Uzwil. In the autumn, the second block is then held with a preparatory correspondence course of the same length and the final intensive block in Uzwil. In the two preparatory courses, the students must deal with 21 different subjects. During the two intensive courses, they must pass a total of 14 written exams. The highlight and completion of each individual block are the two verbal examinations in the core subjects in front of a panel of experts. The new concept reduces the students’ absence from their jobs.
The 33^rd Specialist Course in Feed Manufacturing Technology will start in January 2015 and be held in English.

Focus on practice
The SFT is a not-for-profit association that is recognized by the Swiss Feed Manufacturers Association (VSF) as an institution of training and continuing education. The goal of the SFT is to impart practice-oriented specialist knowledge on feed production to professionals from the feed manufacturing industry and related industries. Successful completion of the Diploma Course enables graduates to understand all the modern production processes in a feed manufacturing plant and to apply them meaningfully in practice. Analysts said the data may lessen the pressure on the central bank to ease its monetary policies to spur growth.

"Overall, the Thailand economy is in a pretty good shape right now," Rahul Bajoria, an economist with Barclays Capital told the BBC.

"It is unlikely that the central bank will cut rates anytime soon. The numbers clearly indicate that there is no urgent need to do that."

Inflation concerns

The floods in Thailand had an impact on some of the biggest industrial areas and resulted in many factories being shut.

That hurt Thailand's exports, one of the biggest drivers of its economic growth.

To make matters worse, a slowdown in demand from key global markets also hurt the export sector.

As a result, Thailand's government implemented various steps to help stoke domestic demand in an attempt to offset the decline in exports and sustain growth in the economy.

It raised minimum wages in various parts of the country, in some areas by as much as 40%.

The government also announced plans to spend 2tn Thai baht ($65bn; £40bn) on infrastructure projects after the devastating floods.

For its part, Thailand's central bank, the Bank of Thailand, cut interest rates in October last year, bringing down its key rate to 2.75% from 3%.

Analysts said that given the strong domestic demand and increased government spending, a rise in consumer prices remained a concern and may prompt the central bank to keep rates on hold in the short term.

"Domestic demand momentum is certainly picking up and this will spill over into 2013," said Eugene Leow of DBS Bank.

"The focus will likely turn towards inflation, especially considering the robust growth numbers."

Today, FEFAC states: "While pig feed production dropped by 2%, cattle and poultry feed have seen their production grow respectively by +1.5 and +1%. As a consequence, poultry feed consolidated its position of leading segment of EU compound feed production slightly above pig feed".

According to FEFAC, the most important factors which weighed on EU feed demand in 2012 were the still fragile economic situation of the pig sector and soaring feed material costs.

"Among the largest producing countries, Germany and UK performed rather well, with annual growth slightly above 2%, while France and Poland remained stable and Spain, Italy and the Netherlands saw their production fall at rates between -1 and -2%. Production of poultry feed in Southern Europe was affected in particular by the implementation of the new welfare standards for laying hens", stated FEFAC.

"The high cereal prices over the last two years contributed to improving the competitive market position of industrial compound feed production vs. home mixing. However, this gain was offset to a certain extent by the development of alternative pig feeding strategies based on roughly grinded feed and liquid feeding. As a result, Germany’s position as leading EU country in terms of total compound feed production before France was strengthened, with Spain scoring third place", added FEFAC.

For 2013, FEFAC expects a stabilisation in poultry feed production, a further reduction in pig feed production (-1%) and a slight increase in cattle feed demand (+1%).

"Further market uncertainties are linked to the impact of the implementation of the new group-housing requirements for sows. Overall, compound feed production is expected to remain unchanged vs. 2012", commented FEFAC.

FEFAC also warned that, with agricultural commodity prices expected to stay high, the average cost for supply of feed materials could be higher in 2013, as compared to 2012.

"After two major crop failures for soybean in South and North America, a record harvest for soybean is expected in Brazil in 2013, but its positive impact may be undermined by the storage and logistics issues it could trigger. On the cereals side, the uncertainty is still important regarding the quantity and quality of the next harvest, due to bad weather conditions in major exporting countries", it said.

Alexandra de Athayde, IFIF Executive Director, explains, “the Feed Manual is designed to increase safety and feed quality at the production level both for industrial production and on farm mixing.” Ms de Athayde added, “We are very pleased that we have launched the Chinese language version of the Feed Manual. China is the number one producer of animal feed today and only by working together can we continue to ensure feed and food safety, while meeting the demands of 60% more food for 9 billion people by 2050 and to do so sustainably.”

The English and Chinese versions of the Feed Manual are available for download at www.ifif.org. An Arabic, French and Spanish language version of the Manual will be launched later in 2013.

The SFIS project is designed to measure and establish the role of specialty feed ingredients on the environmental impact of livestock production and the Scientific Council will provide independent expert advice on the project during the course of the work in order to ensure scientifically robust inputs in the analysis and prepare the ground for a future peer reviewed publication of the project output once it is completed.

Prof. Dr. Matthias Finkbeiner, Chair of Sustainable Engineering at the Technical University Berlin and Chairman of the SFIS Scientific Council, welcomes the “involvement of globally renowned experts in such an important project, which aims to contribute to global activities in the area of the environmental effect of livestock production.” Prof. Finkbeiner added “the Members of the Council would provide expert review for results of the projects, which will be shared with international stakeholders and with feed chain operators in order to encourage more sustainable livestock production globally.”

India’s millers have much to add to the efficient production of feedingstuffs in this diverse 1.3 billion population market. That is why Perenealde Publishers Limited of the UK and Assocom of India have joined together to bring the first Global Milling Conference, set down for Chennai, India from February 7-9, 2013.

"These global participants' best practices have raised the standards and practices of the industry," said Frost & Sullivan Industry analyst Anjaneya Reddy. "However, with the outlook for the Asia Pacific economy still dim, feed suppliers have had to cut costs to maintain their customer base."

Farmers also prefer fresh feed over fortified or supplemented fodder for animals, as they have access to fresh feed across seasons. Additionally, farmers prefer alternatives to fortified food because their higher prices tend to shrink their already thin margins.

Concrete measures by the industry and the government to market the efficacy benefits of feed ingredients to farmers will boost adoption and expand the market.

"Suppliers must focus on creating awareness of the benefits of feed fortification, such as its ability to extend shelf-life, keep animals in good health, and provide quality products like meat and eggs," noted Reddy. "Organisations and various associations could also customize ingredients to suit the needs of the farmers, as well as take advantage of the safe image of various feed ingredients for branding purposes."

This is annual show organised by EAC, a professional organiser and the Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers Association with the support of other poultry associations and including the Indian feed association - CLFMA.

The show comprised approximately 200 exhibitors, mainly Indian. The exhibitors were showing a diverse cross section of products from incubators, feed supplements, poultry housing, and a few feed equipment manufacturers.

From their observations it was clear that the Indian feed market is expanding in all of their sectors - poultry, dairy, aqua and even pet. The use of manufactured feed is and will increase as the existing millers and new companies invest in up-dating plant or build new mills. Our staff understood from exhibitors and from their own observations that Poultry India is the strongest and most visited livestock event in India.

The current broiler market is depressed which meant that there were fewer visitors to this show this year, however the quality of the visitors remained high. The 2011 show attracted 25,000+ visitors, though there were fewer this year, the majority of exhibitors accepted that this was due to the depressed market.

During their conversations many of the Indian and international exhibitors expressed an interest and enthusiasm for the 2014 FIAAP and VICTAM exhibitions that are taking place in Bangkok from the 8 - 10 April 2014.

They were also told that India and Vietnam were now the top exporters of rice. The ASEAN Rice Summit was discussed alongside the GRAPAS Asia 2014 exhibition and conference. The Secretary General thought the Summit was an excellent opportunity for meeting with other ASEAN Rice Associations and Government Ministries and immediately agreed to attend and support both the GRAPAS exhibition and the Rice Summit as well.

Mr Askam Sudi told them that the Association had a new President, Mr. Ketua Umum, who was unfortunately away at the time of the meeting, however that the Association was already aware of the ASEAN Feed Summit and that the Association was committed to participating.

The summit will convene at BITEC, the home of the event, and will comprise an international forum for Animal Feed Associations, together with related Associations from throughout the ASEAN region in order to discuss and determine the future policies and objectives for the industry. It is expected that the Presidents and Secretary Generals, together with members of these associations will attend and use the summits to prepare for the new ASEAN economic bloc.

The summit will be sponsored by the Victam Foundation, a charitable trust, in order to promote the interests of these important industries within the ASEAN markets and throughout Asia.

The ASEAN countries comprise: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
